Hey guys thinkin of chopping my sills out and putting some 5mm wall rhs in as sliders, my question is whats the best to weld such a thick piece to the panels a have a mig, oxy and arc also any pics of people doing this before would be great cheers guys n gals

5mm is super heavy. I used 3mm plate bent to 90 degrees and pop riveted them on. No need to weld.

If I were to weld it I would probably use mig as well, try and concentrate the arc over the thicker rhs and stitching to the body to get better penetration without blowing holes in your body.

5mm is pretty thick and heavy, but if that's what you've got then make sure you're welds are solid as the vibes on the sill might fatigue it over time.

Also if you get stuck don't be afraid to use google to search, it's a much more powerful search engine than the one on site.

Good luck with the sill cut, maybe post up some pic's when you're done to help others out?

Looks like you still have the sills underneath? Joshyboy's might be rusted, thus the sill cut and not just a bit of added beef?

Joshy's didn't look rusted to me when I was looking at his car - it was pretty clean.

If there is clean material under the plastic, I'd go down Steve125's path. If they are rusty, then I'd look at doing the sills the way we did on the trolley tug, or boat siding the stock sill. If you are going to cut it out, shoot for more ground clearance IMHO.

Sierra panels are tough to weld. With the tug, I backed up the outer edge with 10mm square bar to give me an edge to weld to. The plate underneath is 10X3mm flat bar.

Thanks for the replies guys yh my sill arent too bad at the moment but i want to do it before i fruck them. So 3mm would be fine? Im mates with a fabricator so i can get whatever steel i want and yh i will improve the height while im at it. just want to make them look a bit sleeker while having that extra protection as well

3mm will be fine. I don't have anything thicker than 3mm on my car anywhere except for the radius arm brackets on the axle.

Thanks guys i was also seeing it as an oppurtunity to remove a bit of the rear of the front wheel arch where the tyres always scrub i will post up some pics when i do it but it probably wont be for a month or so cos our welders outta gas and i have to convince dad to buy some more haha!
