Hey guys after your opinions on performance of a/m headlights.

I'd like to replace the headlights in my 1990 Sierra, and I want to go to H4 setups.

In your opinion what do you think is the best aftermarket upgrade brand? The Ebay replacement housings im not keen on, a bloke in my 4wd club has them in his GQ flat tray with a H.I.D upgrade, and they are putrid, they throw the light absolutely everywhere and you can't get any control on the definition of the light emitting.

Years ago another bloke put a Hella H4 upgrade in his GQ and I thought they were not too bad, pricey, but worth the money if the upgrade is actually a benefit.

Whats peoples experiences with replacements and performance? I plan on probably still running a 55/60 globe, just a good light bar for long distance driving on high beam.

Purchase one of Royce's looms found in the business section. I'll be doing this then upgrading the headlights.

I've had Royce loom(bright eyes) in my old Sierra with h4 bulbs now I have it in my Jimny with 90/100w blue h4 bulbs. Plenty of light.

i run philips +80 H4's in mine... theyre a cool blue flavour though.. the light output is huge, very happy.

been thinking about chucking a royce kit in also, but it'd likely piss off every other motorist if my lights were any brighter.

Dank sells some nice housings that aren't expensive and have a nice beam pattern.

Its the HID kits that make the beam pattern terrible, the HID globe outputs light in a different pattern to a H4 so its not controlled by the reflector and lense correctly

Superduki, as you are in Tassie, I assume you do a fair amount of deep mud. It's almost impossible to seal a H4 insert to stop it filling up with water. All the cars in our club with H4 inserts have mud in them. (Inlcuding mine)

Personally, I'd run an upgraded loom and land cruiser 70 series sealed beams. I haven't done this myself but I am told by someone much wiser than me when it comes to mud proofing that these are much brighter than the sierra headlights.

Save your money for driving lights if you want to run HID in something.

Im with what gwagen said, I replaced the H4's in my old sierra to sealed beams because after half of the trips they were filled with mud.
You would be better to have sealed beams headlights and a good lightbar for driving with, and given that there really isn't that many long straight bits of road here the long distance performance of a light bar really isnt a problem

Cheers mate, as I said in my original post, I'd like to stick with 55/60 combo as they are adequate for low beam use, and because my vehicle is higher I know the affects of bright headlights in a lifted fourby. ( i own a lowered GTi swift as well, so I struggle with oncoming traffic constantly!)

When you say use a cruiser lense, any reason? is the output of them more than a conventional Sierra? I agree that yes I will be doing deep mud, plus dusty conditions mainly, so a H4 setup probably isn't the ideal solution, so I am open to discussion!

Thanks for the advice Royce, I did think to myself that it has to be the design of the globe not allowing the reflector of the lense to actually work correctly!

Simon the Landcruiser lights are a Halogen sealed beam. Best of both... light output and waterproof.

Ah ha! thanks Jas, thats answered my q. I best look into them then I guess. Ebay is suitable for such an animal or do I look locally at a 4wd shop set? Or even a local auto elec joint?

I have royces light upgrade and it's un believably bright, with stock 30w lights it beats phillips 90w hands down.

I did a similar thing to Royce's looms, I've got a Super Carry I bash around in, and the headlights were poo in it. Quick voltage check found I was only getting just over 11 volts @ the lights, Ran a relay to both circuits allowing a full 12 volts, and it certainly increased its light output but still not fantastic!

im very happy with the headlights and hid kit i got from ebay too. one of the best things ive done to my car. only down side is in the wet it doesnt light up too well cause the light is a white/blueish color
