faulty starter wont bring on the check engine light.
As suggested check the Voltage at the battery under the following
- just sitting there
- while you are holding the key on crank
if the voltage at both of these are good then move down to the starter and check the Voltage on the main battery feed and also the "trigger" wire while you are holding the key in the cranking position.
also tap the starter motor lightly while holding the key in the cranking position. If it starts then you got a problem.
