ON A '99 JIMNY
.... on a previous post here I received heaps of fix advise, unfortunatly all failed.............
It is now obvious the the key,barrel assy or the complete switch assy has to be replaced.
NOW THE QUESTION IS..... (or are!)

What parts do I need?
A home ,mechanic job or specialized dealer job?
Special tools?
Parts costs estimate?
The ignition imobilizer does not cause any concerns as it operates from a seperate dongle, along with the central/remote control.

Does it have an air bag in the steering wheel???

NO AIR BAGS at all, this being the '99 model, prior to the bags.
There appears that this is a 'rare' prob as I can't find any threads or info on this replacement............. some one must have done one ???

They are designed not to be easily removed..
You need to remove the sterring column first.

Then use a punch to undo the bolts, turn it to the on position (which might be hard in your case), and pull it out, you might have to drill it out to get it loose or something.

Check the FSM, full instructions are there.
Get the matching door locks if you can otherwise a locksmith should be able to reset them for you to the new key.

take center of wheel off, remove wheel (steering) remove plastic shroud from colom.
You should then be able to see the lock, it will have 2 "security bolt's" that the head's will have been snapped of, hammer & center punch them to loosen & replace you lock...

Thanks for the replies, I was NOT anticipating it to be a plug and play operation.....
What a time of year to have these probs... local dealer service dept clo0sed till the 6th.. oh well....;.
It appears that I will have to find the ON position in any case,,, Any experience in drilling out the barrel assembly???? Could this be possible?? maybe a 6mm drill at each end of the key slot,,,, or a 15mm core drill or hole saW ???? Radical operations at nesessary times.... if i can get the barrel to turn then a screw driver / simular could be used as a key.... Any methods of getting it mobile will be tried, as Jimny was to go on a bourke fishing trip on the 2nd,,,, if jimny cant go then it might be just local (dubbo) fishing in the SX4, sx is still to new for rugged work!!!! So I have been told!!!

Follow this, then a lil philip's head screw in the base of the lock will have the switch out, a blade screw driver will turn that, presto, car run's....
but take the lock out, as it has a steering lock in it.....

Thanks for the nfo steak-knife, we will try this method, as soon as my son in law gets back, I am reliant on his hands at the present as a recent stroke has left mine a bit weak and numb. still able to fish and 4wd though!!!
