firstly i will introduce myself.
1991 Suzuki vitara 3 door jlx
Josh From South of Adelaide, had the vitara for 4 years no mods except for small muddies and roof racks.

so my problem with the old girl.

i have is a oil leak asked my family mechanic if its worth fixing he said dont worry about it will cost me a arm and a leg, i thought about fixing the leak myself and rebuiling the engine while i do it but the carby engine is just gutless plus my clutch is stiff as so i wouldnt mind just replacing the engine and gearbox myself. ive heard that the gti turbo engine is great or even just non turbo just wondering how do i go about getting the mounts and all that?

any suggestions to what engine or what i can do to my suzie would be great

Keep it simple.
Just replace things with original stuff.

Any motor conversions will cost more work or time,
which would be wiser spent on an EFI Vitara, thats way more powerful,
already.
Just my opinion,
carby Vits are good and simple,
best kept that way.

Judging by the "cost you an arm and a leg" that sounds to be the rear main seal. You will have to take off the clutch anyways to replace it so might as well do it at the same time. The seal costs about $20.

I honestly don't think that a 1.3 would be better than a 1.6? the main reason they're zippy in a GTi is because they're about 500kg lighter and being a high revving motor with not as much torque as the 1.6 they're better suited to road use.

welcome to AZ, good to see more south ozzies' on here... don't mind the ham lovers.

the oil leaks are possibly from either the front crankshaft seal, sump gasket, rear main seal or the O ring that seals the distributor housing.

as for engine conversions, the sky is the limit... but i'd look as doing a G16B EFI swap, pull the old engine & gearbox out & put a clutch kit & new clutch cable while it's out.

the best option would be to pick up a EFI SWB Vitara wreck or a complete one with good running gear & a stuffed body as you'll need things like the wiring loom & EFI fuel tank etc.

If you plan on doing engine swaps, G16B EFI is the Easiest/Cheapest/Best Bang for your Buck upgrade you can do, its been done by PLENTY of people, and theres lots of information on it.
