Gday all

I put in my transfercase protection plate today from MIC, its the alloy transfer case skid they advertise, has steel arms that cup around/under the transfer case brackets and the plate bolts to them.

I let the transfer down slightly and rested it on a block of wood as i only removed one bracket at a time and fitted the new bracket to it and the mount that put back in.

Now we have wierd whine/ whistle happens through all the gears but really noisey and ever so slightly grindy through 3rd-5th " not the shift" sounds like a bearing, put it in 4wd and sounded slighty grinder but didnt get up to speed to check for the whine/ whistle.

its a 06 jimny vvt,

will give it a good checking in the morning. just seeing if anyone else may have had a whine/ whistle from there gearbox/ transfercase area.

Do you have a driveshaft rubbing? Did you change anything else while under there?

nah no rubbing, and didnt change anything else. very confusing

Have you checked oil levels lately?

I will check them shortly shouldnt be low only just put new oil in 6 months ago. well fingers crossed :S

its just wierd that its only started happening after i put the plate on never heard nothing about it beforehand,

I dont know if letting the transfercase slightly hang may have put pressure on a bearing or something and now it having a cry.....?

Shouldn't have worried any bearing. Check your uni joints by grabbing the shafts any giving them an up/down shake. Give the slip joints a visual check also. If you're unsure of anything then post up pics

ok transfercase is definatly not rubbing on the guard.

uni joints are all good.

slip joint is leaking a bit of greasy water from the boot.
but I have had troubles with it before. had never been greased the whole time we had it serviced for warranty and was seized when i moved up to cairns and went for a wheel it started wobbles and vibrations and all shit on the drive home, had some free play when i cleaned it up, so i cleaned the shaft up and regreased and put back and was tight as.

but the front shaft doesnt spin when not in 4wd though... does it?

when i grab the shafts and move them, i can hear the gears moving in the trasnfer clunk clunk.

i tightened the breather hose.

took for a spin still making the whistle/whine its a mix of them both, but when i drove past the mrs she reakons it sounded slightly grindy.

im just confused as to why it would only happen after i put the transfer bash plate on..

maybe having the transfer on a slight angle slipped somehting out... nahhhh had my sierra transfer flapping around the joint and still wernt good but thats a sierra ohh yea

and stek when u say CV's u mean the ones in my hubs.... lol they seem ok did some u-turns and no clicking or bad sounds.

What speed does it make the noise? Is it speed related? Can you pin point an area?

definalty from the gearbox or transfercase.

it mainly makes the noise from 3rd gear up, u can ever so slightly hear the noise in 1st-2nd

it sounds like your in 4wd ultra ultra low but im not lol im only in 2wd

and its not locked in 4wd the front shaft can easily be spun by hand

yea mine is push button.

I put it in 4wd H and Low, and drove around on the field of dirt. They get there normal noise, But I didnt get up to speed or anything to check from 3rd gear up

but yea on the ground in 2wd i can spin the front shaft its no engaged

its a definate head buster.

if i cant find the problem i will take the plate out and see if it goes away

the only thing it has done to the transfercase. is the new arm need to go unbetween the alloy bracket and the rubber mount so it becomes 1 piece, and it has mounts for the bash plate to bolt to.

it prolly spaced the transfer case up the thickness of the plate which is about 4mm.

could be that you pointing noise that used to go to the road into the car, worth a try....

I've seen roof rack's make me think the diff's frucked....

and also the holes in the bottom are not making the noise when i went for a drive before i put gaffa tape over them to cover them up

nah thats the same mounts from the front and rear shot of it stek just ran out and checked it has atleast 20mm clearance from the floor.

Does the plate touch anything that could transmit vibrations/noise into the car? Always a bit hard to see in photos. You might just have to remove and test as you said

ok i took the bash plate off, i didnt take the brackets off left them on.

took it for a drive up to 80km/hr all that permits this side of cairns

no whine/ whistle noise, all good. grinding must have been in the imagination lol

must be 1 of 2 things

1- the bash plate is echoing the sounds of the transfercase

2- the design of the cradle is making wind noise but i suspect more the 1st option.

maybe they put gearing in our car since they where doing it up as a demo car ha ha ha ha i wish
