Solid wire vert up, to a structural purpose standard, pritty average but got me a pass on that weld for 3rd year tafe as a boiley.
3 run vert up with flux core outer shield, again very average but got me a pass.
J prep in 25mm plate. something like 20 runs in this including the backing run. This is the macro test. Very happy with this as I did it first go, only one in the class to pass first go.
Those v8 intake manifolds come up on every forum i'm on lol, you guys should see some of the fab work and welds on mini truck forums...

And cracks in welding.....
I have a Tracker (Vitara) rear A arm relocation bracket from a Calmini Kit here that the owner was seeking to submit for engineering approval.
As part of that process, a crack test was required, run of the mill for fabricated parts going through the engineering approval process.
Surprisingly, the bracket was cracked through the end of the weld. ( I am an NDT technician of 15 years experience and carried out the test myself) It was a small crack granted, but it was in a critical area.
I repaired it, but the bracket was never used because the engineer wouldn't approve the heim joint for road use, so we fabricated a ball joint spacer, which has been on the car in question for a few years now. (That spacer was built in 2008)
In progress in this shot.
Whilst I don't claim I'm a good welder, and my welds are never as pretty as the ones on Calmini's gear, part design is more important that a pretty weld. In my opinion, the A arm bracket supplied in Calmini's kits is poorly designed.
Sorry, I didn't intent to hijack this thread with Calmini bashing - I am genuinely impressed with the welds on the A arms posted - sometimes I think part design is a bit lacking.
Steve.
