For anyone that is not sure, take the top inspection plate off and count the teeth on the input, LJ50 soft top will have 14 teeth, LJ50 hard top and LJ80 have 16, if it has 18 you have a rare tall geared supersuzi transfer.

Out of interest, do you know what the ratios in the above mentioned case were?

Pretty sure Sideways wes asking about the Supersuzi transfer case, set up for the Corolla motors they used to put in them.
So Hillbilly, why not go with a Sierra case and off the shelf gears? Best thing I ever did to mine.

That's the one! Sorry, I should of been more clear. I've never heard of such a transfer case before.

I know the other ratios off by heart.

Yeah sideways, us old guys that have been around since LJ's were new still have a few secrets up out sleeves. I remember when the first 1 litre Sierra was wrecked in Brisbane, we were like a flock of mad men buying stuff just to see if it was interchangeable with our LJ's. My mate thought he was a legend when he first fitted a 1Litre cv to an LJ axle and we saw the first FWH on an LJ in Brisbane, it was still drum brake as the 1litre was not even disc, it wasa hard top and it had rolled with less than 100km on the clock.

I think you need to share some secrets! :P

I would feel like a god if I had of figured out the LJ-Sierra hub swap thing.

4WDing in the early 80s and before then really intrigues me, I'd love to see pictures of your cars from back then and descriptions of how you modified them. :)

When I put a Datsun engine in mine we had never heard of anyone doing it, a mate had done a Corolla in his after hearing they would fit (no computers to search on in those days it was word of mouth or 4x4 magazine articles). The problem was always the height of the engine which caused carbie hat to bonnet clearance issues and the LJ steering box was always in the way.

When I decided to do a conversion 1300 sierras had not been released yet we had done a couple of 1 litres but were looking for a bit more power, we went to the wreckers and started measuring everything we could find, corollas, geminis, ford escorts, galants etc to see what would fit best (these were late model cars at the time). The A series datsun engine looked to be a good fit.

A bloke we knew through rallying had an engineering shop and used to do our shortened jack shafts, I went and saw him and he was fitting out a 1200 coupe rally car for someone, it was running an import A14GX engine, it was the perfect choice, small compact, twin side draft carbies, factory headers, 10.5 to 1 compression, double valve springs etc. Within a couple of months I had one in my LJ with an auto transmission from a 120Y, I still reckon I had the first auto LJ.

Later that year the first 1300's were released and all us LJ boys were thinking awesome now we have a bigger Suzuki engine to put in.

I'd probably try the wanted section as well. Works a bit better when you want to buy something.
