So I'm just looking at things to do with my Zook, and one of the things i'm sort of thinking of doing, and just need to find out if it's actually possible without too much hassle, is converting the springs from coil to leaf.. this will mean 2 new axels? will anything else need changing? :?

 also .. i need to find some sturdy wheel arches, I like the look of the jeep wrangler arches, but I don't trust their strength ... however, i suppose you don't rely on the arches.. they're just a safety thing and also to legalise the width of your tires on road...

sorry this is starting to become a long message.. please let me know if you have any idea's on either of my queries, thank-you :)

possible? well anything is possible.

My Idea on your current quiery is simply that you are rather silly :P

I don't really know what you would be looking to gain but the simple answer if you really wanted a leaf sprung would be to sell your coily and buy a leafy. but thats a step backwards anyway ;)

Much easier and cheaper to sell your car and buy one that was leaf sprung from the factory than convert.

Steve.

PS flares don't need to be strong as much as durable (i.e. they need to flex without breaking rather than not flex in the first place)

There are also guidelines about how rigid flares need to be. Stock TJ flares are OK, they just look crap IMHO.

ah true- i don't know it was just a general query with the springs.

I know that with the flares, because my friends sierra has fibreglass or something similar flares like the wranglers.. which to me sounds a bit silly ... would that not just crack and break upon impact?

yeah I don't like the stock flares on the car, nor the arb rubber ones i have, they have broken and ripped etc.

There is a thread on here regarding bushwhacker style flares designed to fit Sierra's and as said sell the coily and buy a leafy and you will find your modification path alot simpler.

Ok I'll bite....

Why?

I sometimes wonder if Its possible to fit a Corvette ZR1 LS9 6.2L Supercharged Crate Engine with nearly 640HP to my sierra. But then I realise that there is no point.

Why would you want to swap to leaves? What do you think it would achieve? What is it about your coils that you are so unhappy with? Have you considered that there may be an easier fix than regressing to leaf springs?

I am really confused as to why you started this thread :?

check out rusho's build thread... thats how you "fix" a coily right there =) (not steak_knife's way which is to burn them).

do a search in "trips pics & travel" for 96coily... his coily runs lifted springs and 30" tyres and he gives it absolute HELL and its been very reliable for him. He doesnt have lockers though so theres less stress on axles etc, but then he hits everything 5x faster than us and bounces his way up everything.

As far as flares go, i'm still using the same clark rubber 50mm flaring i put on there nearly 4 years ago now... i rub against walls all the time and theyre doing fine, and they cover my 31x10.5" tyres on 15x7 -38mm rims (which makes my sierra 188mm wider than stock, or 94mm each side).

Rusho's isn't quite finished yet.

A more complete build to look at is Sam's coily.

And thats a fantastic approach. Kudos.

But you still have not explained what it is that has lead you to ask about this course of action.

put a set of 16 inch fox shocks that would be the best way to go and some lux difs and some 37 treps

Ignore that dribble.

Coilys get paid out because they are 'soft'. They are the 'luxury' sierra. Haters gonna hate

If you haven't ACTUALLY had any problems with the coilys performance, then leave it be.

lol =) you're mean ruthless.

SUPAZOOK - lux diffs used to be a popular conversion to add strength to the diffs (by replacing them) as well as a little more width. its no longer neccessary given the aftermarket parts now available.

honestly - just drive your coily, you'll soon learn where its letting you down and fix it as you go along =)

Stock for stock there's almost no difference in performance. The advantage is once the modifications roll in.

They never had the coil sierra in the US and so there were no heavy duty parts available developed for them in the US, where large volumes and relaxed modification laws mean lots of parts get developed, like for WT leaf sierras.

Because every mechanical part of a coil sierra (except the rear diff centre) is unique to it, you need to be quite a good fabricator, and have more budget, to modify a coil sierra to match a leaf sierra off road.

The answer to that problem is really to buy a leaf sierra. There's no point swapping a coil sierra to leaves - it would be a huge fabrication job. It would be better to spend that time and money making the coils work better.

Steve.

Another coil spring question?
Mine has approximately 100+mm tyre to guard clearance at the rear and 70mm at the front. Should they both be approx same?
I have a little more weight on front, alloy bull bar/gti engine.
Am I better to fit complete spring lift kit or do aftermarket ones sag like the factory ones?
I would like travel/flex to be approximately standard height at the moment, front and rear, drive mostly sand and found I dont really need more.
Will fitting a lifted front spring only, bring it back to near original travel/flex.?
Cheers
