if the eng has burnt valve's you car rebuild the carb till daisy stop's milking but it won't fix the problem, carby is not always the culprit....

That is a very good point.
Sometimes the wheel arch mods we do for bigger tyres can limit the accelerator pedal.
I had to space mine, on the floor, to get full carby operation.
Plus the secondary throat can fail on carbs.

When my girl was a 1.3 Carby I had the same issue of no 5th gear option and maximum of like 110.. so you're not alone...

now that i've converted her to 1.6 EFI 5th gear is my best friend, not sure how fast she goes, but she's definately going faster that 110 and not struggling to do so.

...maybe time for upgrade totally worth it

Haha yer I have worked on it all day today and she is still a slug ran a straight tho exhaust for a bit it's sounded tuff but still no quicker carby seems fine also. And I didn't take to the gaurds extreme enough to effect throttle travel. Just out of curiosity what's a 1.6 conversion goin to cost me I know Its lazy and I could most likely find it on here somewere but just a rough estimate would be sweet. I towed a 400kgboat and trailer (approx) the last few days with my 1.3 carb and still sat comfortably on 105kph in forth on 235 75's. Did not even look like overheating or struggling and held 100kph going up a slight incline without drama. (for me 4th gear is about 3900rpm at 100kph). My engine is completely stock with 250 000 on the clock and nothing but a few timing adjustments and good fuel.
I would sugest there is something wrong but decide what you want before spending anymoney. no point replacing everything if your not gonna be happy and do a engine swap anyway.

Crossed the Nullabor with a 400kg trailer behind my loaded Zook (me + wife + 2 dogs + travel gear) with a 1.3L and 235/75R15's and was able to sit on 100-110kph in 5th except where I was into headwinds, when it knocked me back to 90kph in 4th (or 80kph in 5th and starting to lug a bit).

Not knocking your decision to put in a 1.6L SUPAZOOk but 8k is a lot of coin to drop on a Sierra for most people. I spent somewhere approaching 2k rebuilding my 1.3L from the sump up with new everything (carby service and tune, clutch, fuel pump/lines, radiator, etc) and am very happy with both its performance over the last 30,000km and its reliability. You could rebuild a 1.3L for a lot cheaper than that and still have a pretty high degree of confidence in the rebuild.

Just had a new plan should invest in a car trailer and just tow the thing behind the Hilux that way I would get easily 110 and I would have airconditioning to!

I have no problems rebuilding the engine from the ground up but it would be a fair kick in the teeth if it was just as slow once it was all done.

The mate that bought my old zook still don't have his license back so I might chuck my tyres and transfer case in his and c what happens.
