Hey guys a new noise has developed in the last few days. Sounds kinda like a rolling bearing or something similar coming from the front wheels.

Noise speeds up and down as my speed gets higher/lower, so i was leaning towards a bearing. But I was thinking, whats the possibility it could be a CV instead?

Lucky i have my work van during the week, i might take the front apart and do the swivel hubs while im at it.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated :)

Assuming free wheel hubs are on free and working, a cv is not moving in 2wd. Which makes that less likely.

Bearing is possible, but so is a stone stuck in the brake disc dust cover.

Best to check everything while you got the tools out.

Yeah i had a quick thought about the stone in the brakes idea (happened to work van last week) but i think its less than likely just because of the big noise in hearing going up gutters and over large speed humps.

Grab the wheel and rock it sideways, should be able to feel if its wheel bearing. Also the stub axle bolts can come loose and imitate wheel bearing issues.

If wheel is wobbling, first pump of brakes can be lower than normal, as disc pads get pushed out

Just had a quick look, theres a TINY bit of movement in the wheels but nothing major.

But what i found is that when i spin each wheel (fronts that is) theres an odd scraping noise coming from both?

Would it be strange for both bearings to be rooted? Or would 1 being screwed effect the other?

Noises can trick you,
(especially me as I am rather deaf)
Spent days looking for a front end noise, that turned out to be in the rear.
They can reverberate around and appear to come from another place.

If noise is constant, and speeds up with car speed change,
then you look at spinning parts..bearings, diffs, unis etc.

If it gets much louder over bumps, need to look around suspension,
springs, shox, bushes etc.

So give whole car a look over is best..

christover1 - Yeah i think thats the best bet. Ive got the front bearings and swivel rebuild so i reckon i might be doing that this week and see if theres any improvement. If not ill have to spend some more time nosing around.

Dan - Fuck you and your muffler bearings

Just another quick idea guys, what about kingpin bearings? If they were rooted could it have a similar effect?

king pins probs can feel like bearing probs,
but often you can feel them thru steering as well.
They are affected by hitting bumps, too

FWIW - The scraping noise sounds like a dry bearing, I had this on one of my fronts, it was so dry that dust came out when i replaced it.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's dry really seeing as the hub seals are fucked. Is it possible for all the oil to get out of behind there? I'm gonna get a start on it this arvo hopefully and see how I go :)

Just snuck the zook into the carport for the week while i get the shit sorted. Having a quick look after work and from what i can tell the noise is coming from the brakes?? Stuff a heap of meat on em but it rubs on certain parts?

Ive gotta do the hubs and bearings anyway so i might as well whack the new ones in that ive got. Any ideas why the brakes would be scraping? They dont look all that old though :?

From my experience with brakes, they start making scraping noises when still have about 3-4mm left, maybe they are designed for that I don't know.

With mine I had vibration and thought it was my front wheel bearing so I replaced them, it was still there and then I thought I had a rock in my rear drum but turned out too be dry like i said above. After I replaced the rears the noise was still there. I swore it was coming from the front and I have now replaced the rear diff centre and I've finally nailed it.

The point of the above paragraph is that it's hard to really tell where some noises are coming from even when you think you are certain.

If you can replace as much as possible and keep good bits as spares. Makes you more confident in your car in the long run... well for me anyway ;)

Had a little crack at it after dinner, got one of the hubs apart and first wheel bearing out, all perfect as far as i can tell. Im pretty sure (99%) its coming from the brakes. Its like they arnt retracting all the way?

Ive got my mechanic grand dad coming over tomorrow so hopefully that might help ;)

Bit of an update guys, got as much as i could in between work and dinner time...

Pulled the whole passenger side apart and found alot of grit and shit in the housing. Kingpin bearings werent to flash and one of the brake pistony things was sticking.

Greased it all up and started putting it all back together, hopefully gonna get back into it tomorrow!

Hey guys started pulling the drivers side apart and found ALOT of shit where the CV sits. Majority of it was sand and was bone dry. So im guessing that wouldnt be helping?

Heres a few pics of the joint, i dunno if this is how its meant to be or its just been worn away with all the grit and shit in there?

When i ended up finally blowing all the shit out with the compressor and repacked it again it seems to move alot better now. And no gritty grindy noise which was good!

The kingpin bearings (more the bottom one) was completely full of grit and other crap and could barely move.

Think i might have found my problem?
