Hi Guys,
I recently noticed a strange 'jingling' noise coming from what sounds to be the rear of my 89 Vitara.
At first I thought it was a loose exhaust bracket or something dangling down, bouncing off the tailshaft.
I hear it mostly when backing off....but a little just whilst cruising and it seems to be getting worse.
Any thoughts?
Tomorrow I'll check diff, trany and t/fer case fluids.

Uni joints??? Any associated vibration?

No vibration that I've noticed. I did crawl under it today and try to check the uni's. Didn't feel any excessive play.

Check the dust covers around the input and output flanges on the transfer case. I had the same problem, but under load instead, and it turned out I put a very small dent in the dust cover on the input flange on disassembly, and as such the input flange moved just enough for the dust cover to contact a point on the transfer case housing with every revolution under throttle.

Changed the diff fluid. Old stuff actually looked very clean.
Reading the manual...says to use 75-90 or 80-90 in diff, transfer case and trany.
Drained the transfer case of the ATF it had in it and filled it with 75-90 same as diff. Is there anything I should know about the ATF being in there?
My Burb uses ATF in the T/fer case.
Tomorrow I'll do the trans fluid.

Lot's of Jap cars use ATF in the manual transmissions, such as the Lasers and Mazda's, but I was never aware of it being used on a Vitara, transmission or transfer case. Drain it and put the proper gear oil in it. With all the Lasers and Mazda's I used to service, I used to replace the ATF with gear oil as well, because I found that if the original ATF was replaced with ATF, the boxes self destructred themselves after a few weeks.

Damn! That's not something I wanted to hear. Lol!
Oh well. Anyway....I've replaced it with the 80-90...same as diff.
Today I'll do the transmission. Is there anything in the rear brake setup that could be causing the noise?
I'll swap out the uni's this week also as they don't look as though they've ever been done.
