OK.. i have no idea how to check and see if my diff is broken.. everyone tells me take it for a drive, i cant actually drive it cause a hose with my transmission fluid in it burst!! so thats out of the question. my boyfriend has no time to do anything with it and im sick and tired of my little beast just sitting in the backyard in shame!

May I ask why its so important that you know if your diff is broken before you can drive it?
What makes you think the diff is broken? are you talking inside or outer casing?

The only real way is to pull out the axels and third member(centre) Failing that, maybe jack it up and put it on stands. Rotate the wheels and listen for noises.

well atm i cant move it, and its not in a very good spot to work on it.. so i'll have to wait for a bit of hose that ive ordered before i can do anything.. ive also gotta replace the drivers side cv boot, and do something with my diff mounts... also need to figure out why my sway bar punctured the cv boot.. and i cant do any of it till i fix the transmission...
anyone trying to get rid of a vitara manual transmission??

sounds like you've broken the alloy front diff which is quite common, keep an eye out on here for a cheap replacement.

what year is your Vitara? is it a LWB or a SWB & your auto 3 or 4 speed?

if yeah you're going to need a front diff out of another Vitara with a 5.12:1 which is the most common ratio for the Vits. The diff will have to come from either a Manual 1.6l Vit (LWB or SWB) or from another Vitara with the 4 speed auto in it.

the burst transmission line with fluid sounds like it's just one of the hoses for transmission fluid cooler thats located in the bottom of the radiator, if it is the problem it shouldn't be that hard to replace.

i can't see why or how your swaybar has punctured the boot, they are easy to replace but being the RHS it's a bit of a pain to remove the joint to fix the boot. i'd get a replacement boot & fit it when you are replacing the diff as the RHS CV needs to be removed to get the diff out.... no point doing things twice.

was it one of the mounts that broke or is it the bits inside the diff?

an you post pics up of the broken diff & the swaybar end/RHS CV boot, we like pics around here.... especially carnage pics.

hahaha, there is heaps of info there... broken diff, hole in CV boot, diff mounts, transmission fluid = Vitara auto with a front diff issue.

it has 1-2-D but within drive there is also overdrive.. dont knw what that means, thanks for all your help i really appreciate it i will get some pics when i decide to take some lol

3 speed + overdrive would make it the 4 speed auto... looking at google, you're right, it should have 1-2-D i've never really taken that much notice of the Vitara auto's.

the replacement diff will need to be the common 5.12:1, but double check the ratio you have by counting the number of the teeth on the crown wheel & dividing them by the number of teeth on the pinion.

the diff in your car should have 41 teeth on the crownwheel & 9 on the pinion 41/9 = 5.125:1

Ok well we had a good look at it today and even more bad news came of it.. Turns out both of my cv boots are broken and there was a bolt that supposed to hold my diff in place is missing so the diff has been able to move about 4 inchs so I'll see how it goes..

the CV boots aren't a big issue, apart from letting mud, dirt & water in... they are easily replaced & pretty cheap this is if the CV isn't worn out or damaged. you can get complete new CV's for around $140+

do you know which bolt is missing, can you see any broken bits on the diff where the mounts are?

is it the one underneath the motor near where the front drive shaft connects to the diff or one of the chassis mounts for the diff brackets on either side?

i'm guessing the RHS top bolt if your swaybar has damaged the CV boots...
