I'm just about to order some transfer reduction gears from lowrangeoffroad.com and I was going to get a rebuild kit from them too..

They list a 'Complete' kit which includes a Counter shaft and bearings?? what is this, and do I need it? that $90 would be half my body lift.

After looking at the pics for another 30seconds, I appear to have answered my own question... the reduction gears all seem to come with this shaft and bearings.... good thing I didn't buy them again!!!



Since I have already started this useless thread:
i'm likley going to get 16x7.50 tyres so roughly 32" the 6.5 gears look like the goods for highway use, but im a bit worried they will be too much in low range... is rock crawling (with momentum ) in 2nd low going to be an issue for the gearbox? Is 5th gear low range a no-no? or will the gb cop the abuse?

the 5.14's look like a better spread of gears to me but they are $130 more... and appear to contain half the number of gears? any ideas on why this is? should i spend the extra? opinions please....

I'm getting some Chromo's too.... anything else I should order from the states while I'm at it?

There are a couple of bearings that you don't get with the reduction gear set.. However a short trip down to your local bearing shop should you need it should get you those bearing anyway... When i did my transfer case i only got the reduction set..

Depends exactly what you after for the gears. Both me and my brother got the 6.5's for our sierras and havent looked back (i'm running 31's). Im sure someone else that knows a little more about the different gears will have more on the pro's and con's of the different options...

Anything else you should get from the states??? Where do you draw the line and say enough is enough?!? hahaha

Have you stripped your case down yet? No? Well buy the full kit then. The counter shaft can be worn to the point of being unserviceable, and the damage is barely visable. Once the case hardening has worn off the countershaft, it quickly falls appart, usually taking gears with it.

Also worth noting..... The needle roller bearings that run on the counter shaft, and the 2 other needle rollers are VERY hard to get from an aftermarket bearing supplier. Lowrange sell genuine SGP bearings, and at a great price, so IMO its not worth omitting them from the order.

Royce should pay me a dollar every time I post this, but...

The 4.16, 4.9 and 5.14 gear sets only contain 3 gears and re-use the low gear out gear from the stock 1.3 gear set. The 6.5 set replaces all 4 gears in the transfer. The benefit of the 3 gear sets means that the factory gear profile is retained and the gears run quieter, but cost more in the manufacturing process. The 6.5 gears don't have the same factory gear profile and have a reputation of some sets whining. But production cost is lower, even though you get 4 gears in the set!

As well as getting the replacement counter shaft, I'd also make sure you bought the shims that are also available from Low Range, and set the box up correctly (Instructions in the FSM or from Low Range). This will make a quieter box and give a much longer life to the gears.

Thanks for the replies... All the gear sets from Low Range appear to come with the counter shaft and bearings, so all good there.
If I get the "Gear Install Supplement Kit (5 Roller Bearings, 2 Main Needle Bearings, Front Output needle Bearing)" i should have the entire rebuild kit.

Since I can't pull the transfer till I'm ready to do the rebuild how many of each type shims should I get so I'm covered?
