Here's a slight variation on the how do I fit 31's threads...

I am planning to fit 16 X 7.50 tires to my 91WT sierra, I realise there will be some massaging to make them fit with a 2"BL

Question is which rims are best for fitting 16X7.50 tires??

Any original rims that are easy to get hold of?

Or should I go for big offset, or will this just increase the tendency to scrub the firewall?

6"? or 7"?

offset is good to counter the height increase (more stability)... there are some nice GV 16" alloy rims around though.

6" would be better than 7".

And they are rarelt bigger than 31" in diameter, so they will fit fine.

Can I ask why? 7.50 R16 is a LT tyre, so they usually have 10ply sidewalls, making them quite stiff for such a light vehicle.

If you went for a 235/85 16, it opens you up to a larger range of passenger vehicle tyres, and you can safely run GV 16x7's, as the section width is around 9".

Not really interested in mags, unless I can find a set for cheaper than i can find appropriate steelies.

There cheap... I'd like to go for a bias ply comp tire, perhaps the Simex JT2's in 31x9.5-16" or the Silverstone MT-117's 31x10/16LT (still LT though??)

The terrain I run in, it is more common to come across loose sandy soil than mud and the aggressive A/T pattern of those retreads would do ok i think... i found the 'BFG Muddy pattern' (on a GQ Patrol) very poor for the conditions i run in... swapped to a set of TSL swampers that only had 5-7mm tread in the centre and found these 'dug' far less (likely had a lot to do with the wider footprint too)
but 31" at's on the GQ got me further than 33" muddies... the 'standard' A/T patterns don't have big enough 'lugs' for rockcrawling though.

I know it seems strange to say that 'standard' muddies dig to much and then suggest a centipede pattern, but it seems like it gets to a point where the tires are so aggressive that the digging isn't an issue. if that makes any sense (i don't do any beach work, just loose sandy soil)

I want to run a 235/85r16 on my LJ at a later date. I was going to get some 16x6s made or get some from China.

Surely a suitable rim was fitted to a Ford F-truck at some stage?

When I inquired, they said the 205/80r16 Insas measure 29" (Retreads often don't measure their actual size) and they fit on an LJ rim nicely.

Atari4x4 picked up some 235/75r15s of those Insa retreads. He reckons they're really more like a 31x9.5 which seems to be what you're looking for.

You can search for them or I'm sure he'll chime in being the post whore he is.

The previous owner of my Vitara had 16's fitted.
At a -12 offset.
Pretty sure they were Kings rims.
May go that route myself

I run 7.50 16s on 4.5" zero offset LJ rims on my WT. The tyres measure just over 31" and don't scrub anywhere on the firewall, bumper outriggers have been trimmed. They do hit the springs though at full lock even with small steering stop extensions. I'm going to try some wheel spacers next to fix this.

When I bought the tyres the shop didn't want to put them on 7" rims but was OK with 4.5s.

or landrover wheels and change the centre to suzuki centres

Most 750R16 are tube type tyres too. So dont forget in that price you will need 4 tubes too. And thats just an old Dunlop road gripper pattern anyway. And they are shitty hot cap retreads and the origonal case could be anything from 6 ply rating to 14 ply rating. Try jamming a 14 ply tyre on a drop centre rim and you are asking for trouble.

Maybe you could try and mod some old split rims of a land cruiser instead

Yeah I saw that thread... I called the guy to enquire when he will be getting some more, but he hasn't returned my call.
I guess that means the 235/85/16's would me closer to 33's then... probably too big..

I wouldn't buy those retreads unless he could supply 4 cases with the same ply rating.

Since im trying to get out of this as cheaply as possible, i think modding split rims would kill the budget
I didn't consider the tubes... That defiantly makes that option less attractive.

Might just have to keep my ear to the ground for some second hand rims & tires.

If you want Road Grippers you can get real ones still as they still come out on some Landbruisers, (Forbys at Moorooka were selling them for $120). They are a tube type tyre too. Those hot caps would be diabolical. Insa also do a "Traction Track" in 7.50/16 as well as 235/85 these are bead to bead remolds. They're marked as 6 ply and tubeless. A copy of the old BFG Track Edge. I have them in a 7.50 on the LJ50, they are still a bit flexy in the sidewalls but pretty heavy. 32.3" diameter on a 6" rim (rims came from China) Lots more options in 235/85 and a proper muddie is what I'd get if I bought again
