Hi all,
Am about to replace my 1.3 with a Vitara 1.6 8v. My query is: which models of Vitara can provide me with the correct starter motor? Carb. or fuel injection? 8v. and/or 16v.? Which years? Any help would be good.

If you do a bit of a search on here and the suzuki section of outerlimits4x4.com you'll find all of that information and more quite easily. maybe start with the "sierra bible" thread on outers. The 8 valve g16s are predominately carb motors. They did make a single point or throttle body injected model but they are pretty hard to come by these days. Speaking from experience (mine runs the 8 valve tb injection) if you want efi get a 16 valve multi point or port injected G16. I take it you know about all of the engine mount changes, exhaust changes and adapter mating of the g16 to the g13 gearbox since you didn't mention these. If you didn't know you'll need to do a lot more research. Though its not overly hard to do its not just a matter of pulling your g13 out and dropping in the g16. Alot of people start then find out they bit off a lot more than they initially intended to chew. Sorry I can't help you much with the years. I think they went to the 16 valve multi point injection around 94 but I could easily be wrong there.

Thanks for that. Yes, I have all the relevant stuff inc. adaptor etc. Just need to know if the starter I need is on only carb. 1.6 motors or FI as well. Then I can go hassle wrecking yards.

I think its the same starter. you can even use your 1.3L one if you grind the casing a little bit.

i am about to do this conversion myself and i plan on using my 1.3
starter as it is a flash gear reduction one.
outers is almost next to useless for info as 99% of the search results
are a question followed by a few pages of nobs (who almost always live in melb) saying search. gives me the shits i would rather guess.

dont hold back shep lol but it is true with outers most the time.

with your conversion mate i believer you can use the 1.6 or 1.3,i just used the 1.3 starter as i have a few of em and just kept grinding away at the side of it where it touches the block until it fit and bolted up nice.

Some people turn em down on the lathe which i was going to do but the grinder was quick and easy.Im sure even the 8v will make it a better truck for you

Thanks for that guys. Yes, I found Outers of little help on this one. Have sourced a 1.6 FI starter which should do the job. I'm using my recon. 1.3 head which has a 32/32 Weber, Camtech Stage 1 cam and Genie headers so have high hopes for the increased capacity of the new motor. I am running 5.14 transfer, 3.9 diffs. and 31s so acceleration should be nice,eh? Ya reckon an Exedy Sierra clutch will handle the power OK?

I have two Sierras with a 1.6 carby motor in each.

One has the proper adaptor plate and one doesn't have any adaptor plate. The gearbox is bolted straight to the motor.

They both have 1.3 starters, with the bit ground off the starter casing. Some people grind it off the motor.

Both motors use the 1.3 carby manifold and 1.3 carby.

Don't expect amazing performance just because you put a 1.6 in. It does make a difference though. Great for the torque up hills etc.

appsie was after a photo of how the 1.6 motor is connected to the 1.3 gearbox without the adaptor plate. It was like this when i bought the motor, but never have had a problem in the three years i've had it. There is other ways people do it aswell, with tags so they don't have to drill the block.

thanks for the pic steve,i have a benT adaptor kit coming but was curious,looks like itd be ok that way.SO,are you saying some people weld tabs off to the side of the sierra box,to get the same hole centres as vitara block??

some people do weld taps,or use a plate,personal prefrance really,as for the starter,if running a std sierra box,than you use the 1/3 flywheel,clutch,and starter...

or if you want an even better fitting starter use an import reduction drive from a 1.6 vitara
