had mine for 5 years now in a few twin locked zuks, done maybe 100,000kms

the gear ratio may be the same , or close, but the rotating mass and drag caused by the size increase and tread pattern change certainly isn't the same.

I cant see how that would cause you to 'hate them on road' since the 6.5's have the most high range reduction available???

I dont hate then, I run them in mine.
if I could reliably run a slightly larger reduction I likely would.

what I'm getting at is dont expect gears to just compensate for larger rubber etc theres more factors that come into play than just the new tyre diameter

x a metric truckload...

as an example swapping tyres from MT/R's to my retread Simex copies is ridiculous, when fitted the sizing is almost identical... it's that bad it's like driving around with the handbrake on about 4 clicks. exactly the same car/conditions it uses near enough to 4l/100km @ 110kph on the angry tyres.

I've got them and I love them. Quite possibly the best modification i have ever done in terms of its current driveability. I'm soon upgrading to a set of 32x something tyres or maybe 33. Once i have done that i will be possibly looking into some diff gears just to bring the highway revs down a fart. Thats my opinion

If you currently have WT diff ratios, you can't lower highway revs by changing diff gears - the diff ratio (3.7:1) is already as tall as possible.

I have TT 6.4's and I think they are great. They have been run out of oil/filled with water twice and mercilessly flogged and they are still dead quiet.

Having said that, 6.5 diff gears are only appropriate if you are into steep, technical driving. They are too low for mud work, where you instantly end up in 4th low. Low range reverse is far too low to be useful for rocking out of mud. I've been known to use high range in reverse to generate some wheel speed to get out of holes.

I don't advocate using 5th low and generally rarely exceed peak torque revs in 4th low. My reasoning is that at high revs in 5th low the jackshaft and input shaft speed is equivalent to 120km/h (or more) of road speed in high range. Spinning anything that fast and then, say, encountering a bump that shocks the driveline isn't ideal.

Interestingly in an auto vitara, when low range is engaged 4th gear (overdrive) is locked out.

Took me a while to realise that,
I was turning mine off manually for a while.
Think it turns off for 4wd Hi range, too.

I've used 4th low pretty hard and can't really see any problem with using 4th. 5th worries me a bit though. I have used it rolling along, but it's no hardship to pop into high range.

I'll add that Piggles had a 1.0 sized gearbox so 5th was extra tiny, but I've never been a fan of 5th low in any of my cars.

I just had no other use for 4th or 5th with the 1.6. Mud holes it was better in high and so was sand.

Had them in the SWB for 2 years with 29" tyres.
Yes it revs at highyway speeds but for crawling on rocks you can't beat them.
I haven't had any issues with mounts until I twin locked it.
In saying that I think the replacement mounts were way sub standard.
Don't buy mounts of eBay.
Looking into V8 Landy engine mounts instead.

my diffs are standard maruti w/t 4.1 ratio
with 31's and a 4 spd the revs are right up there at 90 kays
but if i encounter a headwind or a hill it still kills the little 1ltr

there have been a few posts lately from noobs asking about 6.5s and most of the time the majority of
the responses state that 6.5s are crap.

i reckon most of the people that dont like them have never driven on them so i thought a poll would be interesting.

15 to 1 against is a lot different to the answers in the threads asking about the gear sets.
