It's time for me to upgrade the sj80 and I have sourced a few options and just want to know what you guys reckon would be better. I can get my hands on a complete either of the above, although I would like to know the power and torque I could expect once in. Cheers guys

Do you want this swap to be legal? If so, it might be difficult to get a G13B GTi approved as it is likely to be older than your coiler.

I'd fit a G16B anyway, mostly because it allows a much better choice of gearboxes, and more torque.

i am doing the 1.6 conversion into my coily at the moment.
not sure how it works in qld but in canberra i will have to take my car to sydney for an emissions test before engineering as it is an older engine.
the other option to look at is the baleno 1.6 as it would be easier to find a newer model but a little more work to put in so you really have to weigh it all up i guess.
i found a good vitara 1.6 so that made my mind up for me

Do you have a cost for that test? gregc investigated this when he looked into engineering his 660cc Cappuccino conversion and the cost was staggering - $2700 or so, and if the car fails, you keep having to pay the full cost for each test until it passes. This was for an ADR emissions test.

Maybe NSW is different?

It is, we have free testing at two locations - Penrith and Botany. They can't do testing to 79/01 standards however but he'd just have to pass the 37/01 test. (which as long as you have a good cat and a fairly tight engine with no fuel fume leaks will be ok).
For ADR testing you'd have to go to the likes of Ford or Holden in Melbourne. Hence the cost (although I know that with interesting cars they appear to waive this).

When did these so called changes come into place? What do they allow? I just can't see how you could go almost 3x the original engine capacity

did it not work well at all? i only assumed it would have the torque of the 1.6 with the kw of the gti... but i only have a basic understanding of how all that stuff works.
