So when I first got the trailer, I got F100 rims from warpac ,and they got me to meaaure the distance from the wheel surface to the chassie;all good, the 205/75/15's fitted perfectly.

I got rich, and figured I put the same size tyres on the trailer as the car;235/75/15, drove up to Kingsborough, and during the morning check noticed the fucking things were rubbing on the schakle bolts.

Chewed 3 or 4mm out of the tyres.

A smartie up there suggested I reverse the rims, works perfectly.

1. Is this legal.

2. Can I buy 10mm wheel spaces, and from where.

Done 2,000K's like this, and all seems good.Fuckall weight in the trailer, but checking tyre pressure is a bit more difficult.

bye

10mm spacers will put too much strain on the wheelstuds.
You need to change the offset of the rims or fit a wider axle to the trailer.

x2

I had an axle made up to suit the width of my Vitara for $80... don't think it will ever come close to scrubbing on the U-Bolts now.

why does your trailer have muddies?

why does your trailer have better tires than your 4x4?

^^^ this man speaks the truth

wolf_rt, the tyre's on the zook are Goodyear MTR's which are IMO a fantastic "all terrains" type of tyres... the chunkys on the trailer are just the Insa Turbo Simex copy remolds that I'll use on the zook during winter, I'll run them for now on the trailer as it saves me chasing up another set of rims & tyres.

Can you buy the type of spacers that come with the studs? Probably cheaper to get two steelies with more offset.

But if I put different offset wheels on the trailer, they won't be interchangable with the car.

how wide is your trailer, 6x4?

sounds like the axle is too narrow for the spring spacing width or you're running large +ve offset rims

that's my anti theft device... pretty hard to tow it away without a coupling.

it's a work in progress, still working on the towbar then i'll get the off road hitch on.

I've got a big knock for off-road hitches.

Off road it's a two man job to re-hitch,you've gotta guide the block into the female part, and if your spare tyre is still on the tailgate, it's a shit to put the pin in.

I threw the spring off the pin away, and drilled another hole for the retain clip, cause the tailgate wouldn't open.

The old hitch with the screw on top was a one man job to connect.

I've welded the new hitch on, so i'm gonna live with it. bye

Only one man/boy lives here,
my off road hitch is simple to hook up.

Mine is not the poly block type, though.

I matched my trailer and cars track width using different offset rims.
Same diameter and tyre width.
Trailer rims will still go on the car in emergency.
They just stick out differently.

FYI The ORAC couplings have a horizontal pin so no drama's with the tailgate/spare tyre.

ebay.co.uk

took about 10 seconds to find Loads and loads of wheel spacers because they aren't illegal over in the UK.

10mm comes without studs, so you can worry about your studs being 10mm shorter, but who cares on a trailer

30mm or more and you get studs so no worries.
It's about $20 for a basic 10mm and about $130 for 30mm spacer with studs before postage. Spacers are illegal in NSW, never looked into other states. However if its the kind of spacer that bolts onto your axle and comes with extra studs like the 30mm version do, then I think the lagality is a grey area, and not so clearly illegal since the 'spacer' is attached to the axle like an axle extension rather then being loosely held on by the wheel

Pretty sure the spacers with bolts in them are illegal in QLD (may be possible to get engineered?).. But you CAN use the ones the studs go through, as long as they are attached (with a dob of silicone or something) to the wheel or axle...

bloody ridiculous.

Not trying to be an arsehole here, but do you have a link to the relevent code that states this? Sounds like an internet rumour to me....

Ok. PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but of all the industries involved with automotive repairs/ sales, tyre shops would have to be the single greatest source of misinformation out there! I wouldn't believe a single word they say! Bolting on a 10mm thick wheel spacer effectively shortens the wheels studs by 10mm. This can lead to not enough thread engagement in the nut. It also adds another mating surface that can trap dirt etc, making possible source of vibration, and I seriously doubt that a dob of sikaflex is going to help prevent damage from the added shear loads the spacer creates.

I agree completely, we would only use 4-5mm spacers, but still pretty dodgy all in all....
they (so i was told) had to be fixed to the wheel or axle to be legal... we used silicone (yes... dodgy)

the spacers with bolts seem like a far better proposition mechanically speaking (after all 80's 2wd hilux front ends have a very similar setup) but are illegal in QLD as far as i know.... (which admittedly is precious little)

The only wheel spacer you are allowed to use is the brake rotor or brake drum.

If rotors and drums were made up to function correctly, whilst providing the same effect as wheel spacers, I would suspect this would fall into the grey area of legality.

The bolt on wheel spacers, although illegal, with the 5 bolts are significantly stronger than where the rear axle meets the drum, (4 bolts onto the drum) on the sierra. But ensure you use locktite, and torque the nuts up correctly.

The biggest issue for me, is the load on wheel bearings, and ensuring the nuts dont work themselves loose.
Balancing is also a bit of an issue.

EDIT: Added more to further discussion.
With the non bolt wheel spacers, the stress on wheel studs remain the same if you have a 10mm wheel spacer, 10 mm offset wheels. The issue of failure, I suspect is due to slop etc, once it gets a bit loose, it will tear it apart (like anything else really). Prone to issues I suspect due to mating surfaces being hard to keep really clean.

Plates with the recessed lips to pick up lip of hub, and give lip for rim would be ideal imo, however these would still be illegal.

And to OP, a 10mm wheel spacer, would be pretty close to a brake rotor. But fuck knows the legality of doing it.

EDIT#2: OP have you considered flipping the bolts to face the other way? Considered using button head bolts?

No no no.......
The "non bolt" spacers place the nut further out on the stud allowing it to flex. Flex is fatigue which leads to failure.

Offset rim makes SFA difference to wheel studs. It will shorten wheel bearing life however marginally.

There is no grey area, it is illegal
