Fuck me, good on you shiv for the spare tyre arm, post seems to have been a bit derailed by arguments about legalities. I want to know what’s legal for my Zook, but also think anyone who has a crack should get a bit of support. Good job.

ill only by 3 new tyres next and swap the rear for a used one off the car.

arm is working great ill get another pic or 2 on here for others.

i had the tire 1mm from the canopy (allow for sag) and now its stop sagging and its about 2" from it now abit more then what i wanted but still happy with it.

its funny how the spare doesnt have to be road worthy. Im from NSW and i carry out vehicle pinkslips for rta and i dont agree. lol. but thats the law!

Nice carrier, what have people used for the bearings in the hinge? Was going to use some old skate wheels but they're meant to be loaded in the other direction. I have heaps though so I could just replace as needed.

I made up nylon bushes (black, self lubricating???) for mine, running on chrome bar (hydraulic cylinder rod). Has worked well so far.

Went this way as a few i talked to had repeated bearing failures with trailer bearing type setups.

^^ Made mine using trailer bearings.
The outer races on both bearings had shattered.
Bearings are loaded and loaded etc whilst not rotating as designed, so they fail much quicker, as the load facings arent dynamic.

I was still expecting the frame and/or welds to crack first.
I dont even run a spare anymore.

The main reason is so that you can run a massive spare tyre to show the cars following you how hardcore you are.

Heavy tyre+heavy collection of stuff to support heavy tyre+ having to swing something out the way to get in the back of the car+having it try and shut all the time when you are parked uphill/on an angle=PITA in my opinion, quite apart from the rattles, wear, jamming etc that tyre carriers normally suffer from.

you will find in QLD cars that do have spares ie (the space saver spare not the full size spare) the one that is smaller then your normal tyre is actually illegal to fit (as you will have on the same axle 2 different size tyres which is illegal in QLD). but i believe there is a time in which it is kinda legal on the grounds its used only to get home and or to a place to repair your normal tyre. something like that.

I know what u guys are saying but I have had a car fail road worthy for having no spare I think the guy doing it was just trying to be a pain in the ass

Space savers are fitted with a special tyre designed for that application and as it is supplied by the manufacturer and passed the relevant ADR it is exempt from that rule.

in the accident this Tyre arm took the majority of the force and besides rounding of the corner and paint, it saved alot of the body at the rear (besides the canopy dieing).

Guess ill remove it and clean it up and sell it

A friend has a Saab sports car and took it for RWC - IT comes standard from the factory with one of those silly skinny emergency wheels that would look at home on a motor bike - Well the inspection went well until they saw that and they failed it - he took it out drove back in and it passed - What a stupid world.
