what are peoples opinions on them. ie "stop smoke".
is it just a quickfix type solution to a slightly smokey engine?

All it seems to do is thicken the oil up and stops the amount getting past the rings or valuves same thing could be achived but replacing your oil with a heavier weight oil.

smokey on startup. pretty bad, i put my hand about a foot away from the exhaust and it was spitting black particles onto it.
its a 1600 datsun carby for referance. not a zook i know, but u guys know a heap about small carby engines.
thinking of taking it to recarb at kawana, westy seemed to have plenty of success there and for not much coin.

i bought some valvoline stuff, its pretty thick, about as thick as hot toffee.

ill give it a go and see what happens.

yea, that avatar IS pretty awesome, i owe it all to you steve - wildest avatar maker in all the west

Johno Recarb is not the answer.
I feel that you may be waisting you money as that will not stop the smoke. Before you go there give me a ring and we can talk of other things to do before you add anything or spend money on it. I could do a compression test and that will tell you where the smoke is coming from. 10 Min job

too late, add the valvoline stuff 'sarv
held a sheet of white paper behind the exhaust on startup and about a minute after.

dot on the right is on startup.
the wet dot is a minute after.

i think its running rich and or isn't getting enough air. (just blew out air filter with compressor to clean out junk).

would that explain the smoke.

it has poor take off and often konks out while idling.

am i on the right track?

mine does exactly the same thing...thats why im not allowed to park in the garage  I think mines just a mixture of water vapour going past the black interior of the exhaust and a bit of unburnt fuel until it sorts out its mixtures and so on when warm...i woulnt worry about it. Mine burns a touch of oil too though.
