Work on the main frame Drill some small holes Now drill some big holes I have to bore the big holes to take the pin next. Going to see if I can track down a slightly bigger drill so I don't have as much material to remove with the boring head.

Do you use coolant for cutting big holes like that?
I have a spray bottle with some cutting fluid that I use, but tired of the mess it makes. Good idea to use the collet chuck to hold the drill, I've never tried that.

I've got a few Morse taper bits, but usually use a keyless chuck

Mine has provision for a c spanner to tighten it up if needed. I really only use it on drills up to 13mm. Everything over that goes in a collet. They run truer in a collet and there is less chance of shank damage. I do use a coolant. Sometimes I just rob some out of the lathe and fill an old powerade bottle. These ones were done using a wurth cutting oil in a pressure pack can. It is good stuff but expensive. Trefolex make a good spray as well but I have troubles getting that locally. If you want a good lube to use for tapping, look for a product called Tap Magic. I have never used anything as good as it. I have a bottle of it that I keep for special occasions.

Hey Ball,
Good work on the bender, also is that small lathe in the background an old Hercus, looks like one I've brought home from school.
Keep up the good work too, looking forward too more photos, I'll get some of mine up soon, just waiting on boring the main pin holes and I'm done.

Yep It's a baby Hercus.
The numbers say it was made in 1970.
The accuracy blows me away, it just doesn't have much power. I am planning on replacing the spindle motor with a big 3 phase one and running a VFD for better speed control. I won't pull it apart until I finish refurbishing the Colchester I picked up last year.
I am a a standstill with the plates at the moment. I have drilled them with the biggest drill I have but it is only 27mm. I need to bore them out to 31.75 which would be ok if there was only 1 or 2 but there is 14.
I am hoping to get a 31mm reduced shank drill down tomorrow so I can keep going.

i saw bits of the bender chucked on the floor behind a tool box so i reckon it is on the back burner. looks like i will have to buy a JD2 rather then borrow balls bender.

Close, the bits are sitting next to the mill waiting for me to thrown the vice on and do the next step. Been doing other jobs so I haven't spent any time on the bender recently

Awesome build , JD2 is a nice simple setup but works awesomely I'm machining up a lot of this stuff for a mate at the moment, he gets the dies turned up by a local mob and just leaves the round even though they dont need to be. We just plasma all the plates then chuck it up on the CNC and bang out all the holes and it all slots together nicely. Havent really got a finished product to show just yet however but hopefully soon
