Ok guys,

I have the 1996 model vitara. It's half old vitara and half new.
My model has the newer style rear diff. Like Royce's vitara.
All I know is its not the usual ones. It has a little cut out for the adjuster and not a circle.

Does anyone know what the brake shoe code is? I have had them out before and matched up but the piece of paper has disappeared.

Oh and just for reference.

There are at least three common types of drum brakes to suit Vitara.

Two part numbers I found listed in brake catalogues is.
4 Door LWB pt#1683
2 Dorr SWB pt#1691

The third is not listed in catalogues and are to suit Large drum brakes, Like in my JLX

Large Drum brake #1735

If you are unsure, remove them, and take them to a brake specialist to have them matched up. But obviously don't drive your car without brakes

Oh also, I have a pair of brakes shoes in my shed. They were the wrong one's for my Vit, I just never got around to taking them back for a refund.

The ones in your picture doesn't look like.mine.
I went through about 4 different shops to match mine up. When I had the part number many shops had said they have never had to order them in.
My searches have turned up nill

You could try getting the brake shoes re-lined. I used to do this many years ago with my FJ40 cruiser which had 4 wheel drum brakes.

I used to take the worn out shoes and drums down to a mob at moorooka called interbrake, and they would put new linings on my existing shoes and match them up to the drums, used to cost me about $20 an axle (15 years ago) to get it done, but the new shoes (when I could get them) were $35 a pair.

Might be worth going to a brake/clutch place to check this out, or at least making a few phone calls.

I did order them from ripco and they said they would take a few days from Melbourne. When I hadn't heard anything about my order, I went in.
Originally when I ordered I didn't tell them what car it was for and only the model number. When I went in they couldn't find my order, so they then asked me what vehicle it was for.
He then went out the back and said be found my order. It was definately not the ones I ordered haha it was the same ones I bought last time.
If I didn't get my RACQ discount I wouldn't go back.

So in short, I can get them. They are just that in between model that no one has.

So after many visits to various shops. No one could match mine up.
Suzuki is the only one who found them as a last resort.
They only had an original part number. They rang repco and a few other aftermarket places for me which was tops of them. Repco rang their suppliers who finally told them that they don't reproduce that pad.

Far out. So it's either original or get them relined. Relined brake shoes mean ill be without a car for a week or wait 2 weeks and $150 for original.

Original seems the go right now. Unless anyone else has some input.

My shoe is roughly 190mmx35mm.

i was supplied with N1735 shoes which weren't quite right some of the holes didn't line up & the location of the adjuster wasn't right, took photo's of the original brake shoes & went back to Power Brakes & the right ones which are N1758

Any idea what size drum you have mate?
There was one shoe reccommended that sounds familiar to the ones in yours. But they were 250mm diameter.

Go to wreckers and buy backing plates and drums from a Vit that you can buy shoes for.

Atari, that was inside measurement. So that was a straight line from inner top to inner bottom. If that makes sense.

A measurement would be so helpful.

Jason, would that work? I don't have the bolts on the center of my hubs? I would need all the adjusters aswell?
Almost tempted to do a diff swap. An older diff I can get parts for.

Twice now, once at a suzuki specialist, and once at a brake specialist,
I have taken 3 goes to get the right rear shoes.
There is a lot of inconsistency in whats fitted and listed,
and you never know if previous owners have modded stuff.
I recommend taking in the shoes,
or fitting rear discs so its no longer an issue.

I'm not up on all the Vit differences but I would be going looking at wreckers with a tape measure...
You would need to swap the backing plates, brakes shoes with all springs etc and possibly drums.
Or, swap the entire diff




or disc conversion if you like mud.

Disc conversion seems like a decent option...down the track. For now ill just get a set of shoes and wait till they wear out.

I have taken the shoes out of my car 3 times. Seperate times. A shop would order me a pair that are the "right" ones. All times have been wrong and 3 different types.

take the brake shoes to a brake shop so they can match them up from their books or take a pic of the shoes & use that.

just went & measured a drum.... 255mm across the inner & the shoe area looks to be about 53mm deep.

This is a really good thread to show all the 'the dumb idiot at the parts shop couldnt even read a book right and gave me the wrong stuff' sooks

We can see the book cant keep up with whats what so unless there is a way to match them, IE old parts on the counter at the time, its all just guessing, if I was on the other side of the counter I wouldnt even order anything in without the old shoes there first

Royce, thanks for looking for your old receipt. i appreciate the time and effort.
The number N1742 is the closest one we could find for my car. However, the measurements are wrong. Mine are 190mm diameter and the width is 35mm.
Width seems like it would fit but the diameter is way off.

I have taken the shoe into many different places and none could find one to fit. I may just order those and see if I can make them fit?

your drum is 190 diameter? less than 8 inch? thats smaller than my mini!

I shall measure the drum itself. I have had many people measure the shoe itself which was from the inside points which.measured 190mm and 35mm wide.
So I am fairly sure they are 190. But I will measure the drum itself tomorrow.

That's what everyone has said "that's bloody small" (compared to all the listings for vitara
