There is a white wire at the light fitting which has 12v from the battery on it all of the time. When you prise out the light, be carful not to short this wire to the body or you will blow the fuse. It comes from either the horn fuse if you have 14 fuses or the stop light fuse if you have 10 fuses. So if your horn / stop lights are working, the wire should have power. The white wire attaches to one end of the interior globe. The other side of the globe goes to the three position switch: ON - OFF - DOOR. In the on position the switch connects to body ground (light always on). In the other position it connects to a black wire that runs straight to the door switch near the door strap. The other side of the door switch is the body (ground). If the light works when you turn it to ON, but not when you turn it to DOOR, then you most likely have a corroded door switch. You can prise it out and clean it with a wire brush and CRC or WD40.

Well, I went and had a look at mine and the door switch is actually OFF-DOOR-ON. You might need some CRC WD40 on the actual switch contacts in the light fitting - mine looked pretty gungy! Also, cheek that the left hand screw in the light fitting is tight because this is the ground connection for the "ON" position.

And further to what I said about the door switch, it is held in place by spring clips which are the ground contacts to the body. If there is paint or rust in the hole it's pressed into you probably won't get a good ground connection, so you might need to clean the hole out as well as the switch contact, which is the brass ring at the back with the wire attached. It's probably easier to remove the door strap so you can open the door right out to get to things.

Also, if you replace the globe with an LED conversion, not only will it be brighter, it will work reliably with the extra contact resistance in an old vehicle, because LEDs don't draw much current. LEDS are polarised and only work the right way around.

hey John, thanks for that info, once i knew what colour wire i was looking for i found the problem, first problem was someone had cut the wire, i guess like most things in my zook seem to be.. second was that a few of the cables behind the drivers side speaker had obviously shorted out and melted almost all of them together so basically i just pulled them all apart and rewired them all with new wire and hey presto light works, only problem still remaining is that the door switch was broken beyond repair so now i just have to find another one and get that on there and do the led conversion.

thanks again for all the help :) much appreciated :)

for the LED conversion I got mine from super cheap/ repco. pretty sure I got the 8 light bit it didn't quite fit because the cover is curved. I just snapped two lights off the end with pliers to make 6 lights, fits perfectly and took me 10 mins to install. :D
