Just wondering if anyone has gone to the effort of trying to fit a power steer pump to an F10a before ( I understand the pulley could be "fun" to sort out...), and if so how satisfactorily the engine ran it? Am just considering my future engine direction for my LJ, and thinking a G13BB might be the better way to go.

Do the F10a's have an electric idle up solenoid anywhere?
The Vit pumps have switch on them to bump the idle speed when the steering is under a load, on some installs we adapt them to the Sierra 1.3 carbs. It would make a big difference if you could adapt the idle up to work with the F10a

I am looking at putting a Solex CV175 on it at the moment anyway, which could make thing even more confusing...lol. My Sierra has an idle up on the power steer pump, though I have always thought it was a bit weedy, and could do with idling the engine up a tad more.

It will be pretty simple to adapt and activate vacuum pot somewhere when the time comes. I Still don't run the idle up on my G16 (harder to control the clutch with additional disturbances like ECU controlled idle ups) Wonder if the other F series came with pulleys to run PS/AC such as F5/F6 turbos? Ps Power steer is awesome!

There are some (rare) 1.0's with A/C. It might be worth checking some mighty boys, swifts etc to see if that's a better source.
I don't know if F6's run the same timing belt profile and width as the F10 (stuff all else is the same), but they all seem to have double row pulleys for A/C. Mine certainly does.
Steve.

Adapting pulleys would be fairly straight forward with a small boss machined up for it, and shorten the fan spacer. There's plenty of room there to do it. Then you just need to scour the wreckers for the right pulley to use. And make custom pump mounts.
I have done a similar thing for my belt driven air compressor.
My biggest concern would be the added load the pump puts on the motor and how much it'll affect performance. I'm doubtful as to whether the 1 litre would handle it too well.
Here's a pic of my air compressor belt setup:

I'm looking to do this to my 1l soon. I don't really see how it's possible without dual row pulleys or a stupidly complex idler pulley system. Interestingly enough, all the mounting positions on the exhaust side of the block are drilled and tapped on my F10a, but most are just blanks on the 3 F8a blocks I have. Time to go and annoy the Team Mightyboy guys I think! Surely some of them know what's around. Thanks Hayden

Thanks for all your replies people! I like the idea of what you have done there Mark; that idea might fit in with the fact that I will have to space the fan further forward and move the engine further back to fit a 2nd pulley anywhere in front of the engine. You haven't had any issues with the extra load flogging out water pump bearings? As for whether it will effect engine performance, I don't know (can't be as bad as air con would effect performance!)... Was hoping someone maybe had done it so could enlighten me . If I try it, it could be a case of suck it and see...

I've had the compressor set up for about 4 years with no water pump issues, I think because it puts tension on the opposite side to the alternator it equalises the bearing load, rather then causing increased load.
I only run the compressor when parked, with idle up (manual cable setup) to 2000rpm for best compressor performance. The rest of the time the belt/pulley are running unloaded via the compressor clutch.
Is an lj steering box the same as a Sierra? You could look at running a jimmy manual steering box for lighter steering, not as good as power steer but still an improvement
Then again, I would like to see how a 1litre handles power steer so I know whether its a viable option for snotbox.

If you take the view that much of what you can do with a 1L is a compromise, and accept that there is not an abundance of power, then if you used a smaller drive pulley to lose less power, would that mean that either power steer or aircon would still work but with less effect, or would they just not work at all?

Then again, I would like to see how a 1litre handles power steer so I know whether its a viable option for snotbox. LJ steering is a mess. Steering box is on the firewall which pushes and pulls a steering arm to an idler arm at the front which then attaches to the "drag link". All this has to be hacked out and a more conventional style steering arrangement fitted to do anything for power steer, and to do anything much with the gearbox also. http://www.lj10.com/lj80service/pg218.htmBenchai wrote: If you take the view that much of what you can do with a 1L is a compromise, and accept that there is not an abundance of power, then if you used a smaller drive pulley to lose less power, would that mean that either power steer or aircon would still work but with less effect, or would they just not work at all? Actually I think a G13 or G16 is a compromise . Injection, power steer etc etc, all at the cost at more potential to break stuff... I think just running too small a pulley would mean the power steer or air con would be ineffective at low RPM?

mrw82 I like you arrangement. I have a AC generator and control box here that is engine/belt driven. I may set something up like that when it is time to install it. BenchaiQuote: If you take the view that much of what you can do with a 1L is a compromise, and accept that there is not an abundance of power, then if you used a smaller drive pulley to lose less power, would that mean that either power steer or aircon would still work but with less effect, or would they just not work at all? We do the opposite here to get more steering torque at idle, I can not see why it won't work in reverse. I would give the stock sized pulley a try, and if it lugs the engine, try using a smaller pulley. If you don;t have enough power in the rocks at idle, maybe install a hand throttle to bump the idle while you steer? Lots of good solutions. FWIW I always thought the idle up for power steer was bogus too, it never bumped the idle up enough to make a difference for me.
