I don't see the big fuss about 16's. There are plenty of great tyres available for them, and the sidewall really aren't any heavier in most MT's.

You'll fit the 2L brake easily under those XL7 rims, so just pick a tyre that is within your budget and go have some fun. The difference in price between 15 and 16" tyres is negligable these days.

Even 17's are getting easier to find.

id be worries about clearance on the chassis with 285 tyres not to mention the extra width isn't going to make clearing the fire wall very easy when turning. id personally be looking to upgrade your cv's first darky as im finding with mine with the gears now snapping cv's is way too easy to make it fun anymore and that just 245/75/16

Budget may constrain in the short term but long term you will save money from running two sets of tyres.

Can't help the storage space issue though sorry, my little garden shed is full of a mountain of tyres and it is bloody annoying.

Hearing you, hence wanting to keep things narrow. Chassis rub is my main worry with going any bigger than current.

could something like a 255/85 or 235/85 big horn be ok?

wont be stupid aggressive so still ok for road but seem pretty good for a tyre of that style off road and not too bad on the pocket, as two sets would be best for a normal person but your life isnt really normal with upping and leaving randomly

BFG's always seem to be a good allrounder'... either the M/T's or the AT/KO. The AT/KO last forever and a day! I had a set that I picked up used, they outlasted the ownership of the rig. I sold them to my friend, and they outlasted the rig itself (truck died a horrible death). Anyways they lasted at least 100k miles between the three rigs and performed well for all of them.

The M/T's don't last as long but still wear really well, they perform really well for not being a dedicated off road tire too.

First I think you really have to consider the main type of terrain that you will be driving and how often you will driving it compared to onroad. Considering that you have a winch I would be looking at more of an aggressive AT tyre that would be suited for everyday driving. Going the Muddies sure will look the goods and make it well capable offroad, but it will also be heavier and fuel usage would increase. Sure you may be couter-acting it with alloy rims, but it's inevitable that they will easily get damaged if you say do some rock crawling which I'm sure you will do if you get that undertaker in there.

But that's the main reason I have 2 sets of tyres. As for brand of tyre, as you may know I'm liking the Maxxis Big n horny for performance Vs cost and The AT's for everyday driving and easy firetrails. In saying that the AT's performed well on rocks.

These two pages are quite an epic read.
I've been running my new KM2s for about a month now and am quite impressed. They are reasonably quiet for an MT on the black top and grip surprisingly well in wet weather. They also perform very well in the sand. I'm yet to run them on mud or rock but other reports are good.
My last MTs were Federals which were great in mud and on rock but were loud on road and terrible on sand.

I tried that and was always too lazy to swap them so ended up wheeling on ATs

I tried that on my GQ, and i ended up running 36" swampers on the road all the time... they were so out of round it would lift the wheels of the ground at 50kph, but i still couldn't be assed changing them...

Changing them over isn't the big issue, it's more what to do with them in the meantime, what to do with them in the extended future, and how to get the mudders to the tracks if I do go bias or similarly illegal...

Bias ply tyres ARE NOT illegal in themselves, although the load/speed rating and size might make them illegal.

Bias ply on a car that requires steel belted radials for adr regs makes them illegal, hence the reason that most bias ply tyres are sold as off road only. And as Gwagensteve said, it also changes the load/speed rating. If you have a bias tyre in mind, i can check the speed/load rating for them. I'm also looking at prices, but with so much discussion, have you narrowed down the tyres you want me to get prices on?

I do not believe there is any legal requirement for a radial on a vehicle, only load and speed rating. (i think this has been condirmed before?) Of course, with a modern vehicle, it can be almost impossible to find a bias ply tyre that meets the load/speed requirements, but that's a different problem.

I don't like radials off road, even though I now run radials. In fact, my radials aren't better on road (where everyone says radials are so much better) than my previous bias ply tyres, but that's as much a function of their width than their construction.

Unless you are running Krawlers, I'd be looking for a bias ply tyre for off road use.
