I'm using rockmonster 4:24 in my Vitara.
Very happy with them.

I've run them for a few years. I think they are of excellent quality - they're super quiet and all the supplied replacement parts (idler shaft, gaskets, bearings) are suzuki genuine. I'm surprised how many people complain of noisy gears - in high range mine are 100% as quiet as standard. Obivously, there is more noise in low range - hard to avoid with nearly 3 times the reduction - but it's still insignificant. My car has no soundproofing, no carpet and often no doors, so transfer noise is very evident.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. The biggest hassle is that TT don't ship USPS, only UPS, so their freight is very expensive compared to the TG gears that low range offer.

Whilst my car isn't a daily, it has done quite a bit of highway work and it's never run less than 34" tyres. I've run them out of oil once, and filled them full of water/ mud twice  they're still spot on.

They will be pretty much spot on on road. Off road you will have plenty of reduction. Some people claim 6.4 is too low with only 31's. Depends on whether you like steep, technical driving or mud.

Too low?

I run 6.5's with 29's ffs, I've never not had A gear I could choose and be happy with, if you think you need more speed use the bloody high range :p

That said I haven't taken it up the beach yet, nor do I go raging through giant mud holes.

X2.

This is a bit ignorant. There's plenty of occasions where I was in 4th low at high revs in my car, but needed to drop (quickly) to 3rd or second low for certain sections of a track. Considering the car has to come to a standstill to swap between high and low range, its at best inconvenient and at worst dangerous to have to try and swap quickly and cleanly between high and low range on a technical track.

It's not "giant mud holes" that are the problem - it's a long greasy hill with water bars near the top, for instance. Plenty of them around here.

We've got 6.5s in ours with 31's and it is heaps better on road and has awesome crawling in 1st low. Ours were from big balls offroad. and got them for a great price.

cheers

I wasn't trying to sound ignorant, just saying that if it needs that much speed then you should probably be in high range for it, if you need some speed but then will need to drop down, start in low 5 and give it the boot, it's pretty close to high 1 with the 6.5's.

In short all I was saying is pick your range for the terrain you're about to drive and you should be fine, compared to stock gearing you end up with way more range but still have gears close to the original you can use.

I have 31 Bighorns, 5.14 Calmini gears,3.9 diffs with lockrights and am very impressed with the all round performance both on road and off. More than enough low range for anything I will do in Vic high country and excellent in mud as I discovered last weekend. I think 6.5s would be too low unless you are using car for competition.

Do you have any experience with 6.5's? What competition would 6.5's not be too low for?

There's a whole bunch of guys running 6.5's, 4.1's with 5.12's etc, and autos (which roughly double reduction under stall speed) and we're not complaining about being too low.

I'd say in most other states except nsw, cars can get away with less reduction than Vic.

I'm not challenging that 5.1 transfer is a good setup, only that 6.5's are too low.

Yeah, I've found many situations in NSW where 6.5's would have been awesome. 5.14's work well for me but I find my self wishing for lower gears sometimes.

You can't really say what is and what isn't the right setup until you've used each setup on each terrain.
