Well I've got a new project and am lookingfor some inspiration for the interior. Sick of taking the poorol on the longer trips and want my next zook to be comfortable on the inside. It will have gti seats which I have, thinking a new pressed vinyl floor with sound deadening/ underlay( think I can get a waterproof one). Centre console, aircon, decent wheel, coily trims etc etc
So anyone got some pics of clean sierra interiors?

I don't want to be a hater, but I don't really know what a "nice" interior is in relation to a sierra.

IMHO a "nice" interior is when the door shuts are accurate, the heater controls work, the brake and clutch pedal are at the same height, there's no squeaks from the throttle pedal, you're sitting in a good seat, and the ergonomics are sorted properly (wheel diameter and depth are correct etc)

Everything else is really cosmetics and is down to personal opinion. A coil dash looks more contemporary, but it doesn't really function any better than a 1.3 dash. Coil door cards are more attractive, I guess, but the interior of my car is a much nicer place to be when it has 1/2 doors on it due to the added interior room. (gutted skins)

I guess I'm saying that there lots of little things that can be done to make a sierra interior a nice place to be rather than sticking more stuff in it. Spending 1/2 an hour adjusting the doors and tweaking the window frames so the doors seal properly and "pop" when you open them makes for a far more pleasant interior than adding carpet.

I've put quite a lot of effort into getting the ergonomics of my car right. I don't think it has a "nice" interior, but it's comfortable to drive for extended periods and ergonomically a long way better than a standard sierra.

Good point Steve - I had forgotten this, but the biggest change I made to the comfort of the cabin was modifying the driver's seat ratchet to allow the seat back to reach a more upright position. With that done the stock seat is actually incredibly comfy. There is no question that out of all the cars I have crossed the Nullabor in (straight through), I felt best at the end getting out of the Sierra. That's against an EL Fairmont Ghia, VQ Caprice, BF Fairmont Ghia and a camper van (lol).

That mod + carpet + tintop + AC + good stereo + good seals + tidy plastics + dash mat + GPS + yada yada does make mine a reasonably nice place to sit.

Myles, I'm not trying to be a prick here, but whilst that's a clean, stock coiler, I think there are some practical problems with what you (or previous owners) have added.

That roll cage is an injury risk to rear seat passengers whilst doing nothing to add to their protection. I wouldn't want anybody sitting in that rear seat.

Soft tops all leak, so carpet propagates rust under the carpet. Suzuki knew this, which is why Suzuki didn't put carpet in soft tops. (even most hardtops leak a bit)

I guess my point is that while I'm not going to comment on what people think is cosmetically attractive, there are thiings that's can be done/undone to make a Sierra a much nicer place to spend time.

Yep dodgy JPG below. I couldn't get the mechanism any further apart than that without major work on it that I probably wouldn't have been able to reverse, so what I ended up doing was taking a file to the bit of metal at location (2) on the photograph. Took out as much metal as shown by the red outline there. It lets the ratchet engage with the seat back in a more upright position, at the expense of not engaging quite as many teeth as it normally would.

From memory there are 9 teeth that normally engage on the ratchet arm. By removing the bit of metal I've shown you remove the end stop, so at the stock max forward position this reduces it from 9 effective teeth to 8 effective teeth. I like the seat one tooth forward of stock position which gives me 7 of the original 9 that are engaged. This does weaken the seat and it will be less effective in resisting loads being thrown against the back of the seat during an accident, but I have a full shelf system behind that's bolted to the floor so it's a non-issue in my case.

As for the dash mat ... yeah I was going to get some fluffy dice to match, but I didn't want to be too cool



Edit: actually that just made me think ... I'd hate to be driving the Zook with shelves in and get seriously rear ended Hopefully the top ply would ramp up the back of the seat towards the roof rather than just guilloting through, but I'd hate to put it to the test...

Not so sure about the ratchet mod for my application.

Could you cut some angles, say 30°, into the panels of your storage unit to act as "crumple zones"? This is what I was planning on doing when I made mine.

The seats are still in there. I made the cage mate, and Myles is well aware that it is not going to protect rear seat passengers. I made that quite clear when we discussed design options.

Yeah mate, thick padding is on the way for that cage, just haven't gotten around to it yet as I hardly ever have rear passengers (Maybe once every few months I get a back seat passenger for a 10k pickup / drop off trip, and I've never taken anybody in the back whilst 4x4'ing (nor do I plan to until its padded properly)

Well yep, all I no is in wa a sierra sucks to be in on long beach/track drives with 40+ temps, no decent door trims, no insulation so the passengers legs cook, no air flow etc etc. So I end up taking the gu. All I want is a insulated more modern interior so I can use the Sierra more for fishing and longer trips, not just for the 3 months of decent wheeling weather we get here. 6 hours driving with half doors in hot weather at 110 kph ain't my idea of fun .Coily trims look the goods

I'm thinking, coily trims, nice wheel, good stereo, some sort of floor/firewall insulation, aircon, p/steer, and new vinyl floor and ill be very happy

with comfort in mind my perfect sierra interior would be:
-coily door trims
-factory a/c setup
-comfortable bucket seats (old school recaro's)
-heat shield mounted in engine bay on firewall to prevent extractors from cooking passenger footwell or exhaust lagging
-some sort of good water proof sound insulation with new factory vinyl over the top
-quite exhaust system
-good quality stero
-tinted front windows and if a soft top, tinted clears aswell
-different model steering wheel. Maybe a 4 door vit wheel, someone was telling me they are good.
-good condition dash with dash mat and maybe a few functional guages mounted in it.

if you wanted to get a bit ocd about it:
-pull the dash apart and lube any moving parts and lock-tight when assembling it all so it will never make annoying rattle noises when you get onto some of the gay corrugated WA roads.
-and t-case with transfer gears that dont make a shit load of whining.

Best thing I did to my coily was pull all the air filter box and crap out for the heater and put a elbow on the drives side facing at feet
On the out side where it take in the air I pulled out the grill and made a flap that hinged at the back and connected it to the heater controll
When u selected outside air it would pop open 45 deg and force fresh air down on ur legs

I've got a tinny with factory air, factory carpet and a decent bluetooth stereo with 4 decent speakers. I've still got the factory sound deadening on the firewall which seems to work well. It's no Rolls Royce but it's a pretty decent place to be.
After experimenting with some good quality stick-on sound deadening (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID ... rm=KEYWORD) for the firewall of my brothers lwb, I'm going to line the raised component of the floor (behind the front seats) and the rear wheel arches to try and cut down on road and exhaust noise. 6 sheets of the stuff should do it. It's expensive stuff but bloody hell it makes a HUGE difference!

I have added bull dog clips to my interior to keep the slack on retractable seatbelts when i park the car on an angle or incline so that you can get the belts back on when i get back into the car.

Also put my air locker switch panel where the stereo would otherwise be so that the switches are reachable when my left hand is on the shifter.
