as the title suggests

what steps/things to do would you guys recommend for storing a car for long term, ie. one or two years?

in this case a 2 stroke LJ50

i have heard people say fill the tank completely, however they do have a bung/sumpy pluggy thing on the fuel tank, so would it be better to just drain the tank? what about the 2 stroke oil reservoir and the radiator?

filling it will stop it rusting... new oil, drop the coolant?

with the rust on yours maybe its a good time to coat the bugger in rust killer to try stop it going any further while you're gone?

Doing thinks like putting it on stands to get the weight off the tyres/ suspension. Filling fuel tank. Put some large silicon dry bead sacks in the car to absorb any moisture. Even filling the motor completely to the top of the head with oil to preserve internals ( although this can creat issues for you later )

You're probably better off just finding someone to drive it for you, even just once a week down to the shops and back

could buy a big bottel of fish oil or simlar to coat the hole body in

thanks for the suggestions guys.

however i am leaving here in less than 24hrs and i think supercheap is closed being easter monday.

i think a good car cover, filling the tank, and seeing if my lil cousin can let it idle for a bit every now and then is about all i can do. i can only blame myself for leaving it too late but i honestly thought it would have sold.

the tyres and spring are gonna need changing anyway, as for the rust ima see if i can get some of those fish oil cans and give it a coat.

thanks mate, i went down and bought the most expensive car cover they had. but apparently it deteriorates in the sun or some shit, so it may need replacing eventually.

i sprayed most of the body and chassis with fish oil. WD40'd all the hinges and screws i could find. undid all the bungs in case the cover breaks and it gets rained on. filled the tank with fuel. disconnected the battery and put the soft top back on for that added protection look

hopefully she doesnt rust away, but i doubt it. it made it to 38, im sure it can go another year or two

but on the upside, she could completely rust away and lose rego on it then EVERYONE will want to buy it

Only if it's not still over priced.

If you think your cousin might be a bit lazy and not start it up then drain the fuel from the carby and don't bother getting him to start it up. It'l need a clean otherwise (if you make it run on 2 year old fuel it probably will too though!), go price a LJ50 carby kit kit from Suzuistore and you'l see why I suggest it. Not that you'd really need a carby kit (hopefully) but while you're there.....

I'd squirt some oil down the bores, 2 strokes don't have the best track record when left to sit for ages... Also down the inlet for the reeds. I'd take the battery out and stick it elsewhere too.

Other wise, top up your diffs and gearbox/transfer and get him to roll it around every now an then, or even better, take it for a lap of the block.

Might be a good idea to oil up the windscreen wiper mechanism too.

But really, bugger all is going to go wrong in 2 years anyway.

If you need volunteers to check on the zook every now and then- just sing out, there a few of us who can call past to wherever it is and make sure its ok- check its cover, drown the industrial termites with some R10 and Penetrol, kick the cat out of the seat etc.

You still planning on heading for Canada? Our eldest son is making noises about heading there soon for an extended stay as well.
Probably looking at working in building industry or whatever he can find (being a 25 year old qualified plumber probably helps)
We think he is just looking for a way of getting out of fixing the taps in our place...

yes, canada is still the plan. will be in LA one week from now. i leave perth early tomorrow morning though.
