I have got hold of a calmini winch guard/bumper and would like to mount the winch upside down to keep the grill free flowing. Has anyone seen or mounted a winch upside down if so were there any problems encountered.

I can't see any problems with mounting a winch upside down except you'll need longer cables for the solenoid box and a special bar to put it in, it certainly won't run backwards.
Airflow to the radiator really isn't a problem with a winch in front of it.

it will run backwards, my interpretation of mounting it upside down is the motor on the passenger side and the gearbox on the drivers side so you are flipping it, you flip something that spins it will turn backwards so before when you press winch in it will pull cable in the bottom of the drum now it will feed out off the bottom, you cant jsut run the winch the other way as the brake will fair get the shits with you

you could move the fairlead to the other side of the drum though if you are making up custom mounts for it all it wont be a problem

tjm run thier lowmount set ups this way, it just means the cable will spool from the top now and not the bottom. be sure to rotate the gearbox and or motor for propper clearances. oh....and are we talking about a low mount?

This the normal "upright" position for a lowmount where the cable spools off and winds onto the bottom of the drum.


Mounting it upside down, the cable will now spool off and wind onto the top of the drum.

hence the comment that it will run backwards, youll note 2 people said youll need to feed from the other side of the drum, so pulling from the top not the bottom, youll also note you arent one of those two people

They only work one way by design


SO can you tell us what type of winch you will be using?

I am unsure at the moment i was just looking at mounting ideas. Does anyone one have any suggestions about a good brand of winches other than Warn?
