Just purchased a 94 stockman and it screams at 70k's would you change the G/box, transfer or diffs to increase the speed
and what engine mods would you suggest to give some more get up and go?

I drove it 600k's the other day for the first time and the only time I got it over 80k's was down hill ...im sure that it was maxed out, It has a genuine 65000K's on it when I picked it up as it was used in a winery as a site vehicle... I was think that they may have ordered it with low ratio drive train if that were possible however I need to do something to give it some more road speed without losing the off road capabilities

This thread has serious lulz potential.
I've been giggling for ages after i read it.
Wouldnt be surprised if op doesnt respond.

Edit... also change eng oil 10 hours at 6000 rpm isnt great.

I wish I knew what revs it was doing however it doesn't have a rev counter as a stockman... And yes I did check what range it was in 2H because i thought the same all I know is I had my foot flat to the floor ...yep I would have a laugh if it were still in 4 low after 600km. The guy sitting in the passenger was a ex Farmer and couldn't believe how slow it was ..we sat behind several road trains for an hr ...because they past us... So I'm going to do something about the performance of the stockman ...engine and gear ratio

Perhaps screaming isnt really screaming? The trained ear tacho isnt useful when ur not used to it. 4500 rpm sounds loud to people who aarent used to it. 6000 is a lot more noise and the engines are still pretty happy.
Damn it you killed the funny. i started to think it was someone having a lend.

what size tyres is it running, maybe something under size has been fitted causing the loss of top end speed?

My 95 1L maruti would easily do 120. Yes it was singing pretty hard by then, but thats exactly what they are built for.

I didn't think at any time that it was struggling to reach maximum rpm's ...I felt that it was extremely low ratio if anything...suppose the the speedo could have been in mph...Not

I have a mate who has compained about this with their farm Maruti. Reckons it tops out at 80.

Can you count the rotations of your transfer in low to get the ratios?

One rotation of the input flange = how many rotations of the output flange?

You may need to jack up the rear diff to check this.

It won't be a gearing problem, it will have a switch type 1litre transfer and 4.1 diffs, I reckon it will be the engine not revving to its full potential.

I will check out the ratios however I think your mate is right 80km seems to be max...the owners manual indicates 80k's also

I will check the rpm's out, it could be a blocked or resticted exhaust

put a GPS in the car and take it for another spin to verify the speedo reads correctly. As a point of curiosity, put it in neutral and revs the balls off it... you can actually hear redline, the engine note changes considerably once you get there - sounds more like a chainsaw =) i only say that to verify that you're not freaking out its revving too high when it might not actually be revving much at all. Dont forget that redline on these engines in 6500rpm and gears need to be changed at around 3500-4000rpm.

I drove the stockman from Pth to the Goldfields following behind my Wife who set her car via cruize control that how I reconfirmed the speed. I will follow through with all suggestions service the carb and replace the exhaust with a set of headers and see how we go

I've got a 1l Sierra (same engine and gearing as you, just 23 years older).

It starts to sound like it's revving a bit hard at 70, then 80 is about as high as feels comfortable revs wise if you're used to conventional cars.

Keep you foot planted and it'l go off the end of the rather shameful 120km/h speedo. Sure, it'l be pulling about 7000rpm but they are happy doing that.

Remember, these cars have no insulation, the worlds tinniest panels and an engine that was born to rev its nuts off. At 110 mine is pulling around 5500rpm. It's loud as hell even with its super quiet exhaust, it's quite happy at those revs though. I did 110 for practically 3 hours strait in mine when I first got it.

If it's because it simply wont go any faster than 70 on the flat at full throttle, then yeah, there's something wrong. Some 1l (particularly Marutis) seem to just be gutless. A carby rebuild and ignition freshen up should fix that, check the cat too.

Remember, these engines are happiest between 5000 and 6000 RPM.

Bulllllshitttttt it is. A 1l will hit a hell of a lot more than that!

Also, I wouldn't hold one pinned in neutral, that's asking for trouble, they have no rev limiter.

we have an f10 that has easily reached 9500. it regularly hits 8000 (read 10ish times per trip)

if the motor is runing right they redline is what ever you can get out of it.

Next time I take it out i will place a couple of pieces of rag over the head light so it won't see the hills coming and see how it goes... Is there any benefit in fitting a 5th gear to it or is it to close to the ratio of 4th gear to be a benefit in the Maruti

i think the issue is that to fit a 5sp box you gotta make some adaptions to the shafts etc. Prolly not really worth it unless you change to a bigger engine.

No sure if this will work but I just tried to upload a pic of the stockman ...the underneath and chassis is almost like new wish I could get some performance out the engine though.
