They were only made for two years. They have a shit suspension design. Nobody makes heavy duty aftermarket parts for them. They are hard to find replacement parts for.

IMO, if you intend to wheel hard enough to need twin lockers and tyres greater than 31" then a coily is not for you. If not, then a coily is fine. Common problems are: The strut towers cracking (but hey I own 2 vitaras with cracked strut towers so we won't get into that argument). Easy to fix and strengthen. Rear control arm mounts on diff housing tearing. Only a problem if you wheel hard a lot with a lot of lift. Can be fixed easily. Apart from that, only regular sierra problems. Some parts are unique but can be swapped with other suzuki parts - transfer & jackshaft can be changed to WT, doors can be swapped to older Sierra ones without intrusion bars, windscreens are identical (only sealing method is different), bumpers & bullbars can be swapped out to suit WT/NT ones, fuel tank can be swapped with WT/NT one, tailgate can be swapped to older sierra one, lighting is the same except for extra indicators/park lights on front clip. Engine is the same as WT except it runs a multi-rib belt and viscous clutch fan, Front arms are interchangeable with Jimny. FW hubs are same as vitara. Front bearings are vitara style. Front brake calipers/rotors are same as swb vitara. Unique parts only found in the coily which aren't interchangeable are front struts/springs, rear springs, front clip & windscreen surround, front seats, dashboard, rear control arms, front diff (3.9 ratio reverse cut), diff housings, differences in wiring loom include main fuses instead of fusible link arrangement - it's closer to vitara than early sierra. To summarise, not a whole lot of difference there. I own 2 and love them. I drove my daily drive coily to work today - I prefer it over both Vits I have had registered, including my current JLX estate LWB.

Didn't we just have a thread covering this in detail? All you will get is people saying the negatives like want33's mentioned and then the die hard coily fans like Reubs defending them.
For what it's worth they're both good replies but it's widely regarded that a leafy is the easier car to modify for offroad capability.

Thanks heaps for that. the one thing that i thought was weird is how the shocks are inside the coils at the front does it make a difference in anyway with flex? i wanted a coily for the comfort of it aswell coming from a leaf and torsion bar hilux -_- as for the strut towers doesnt sound too good but im quite handy with a welder being a panel beater and i should be able to fix and strengthen them if they were to break. i was planing to get atleast a rear locker and maybe a set of 32s or 33s with a 2 or 3 inch lift. not for wheeling that hard that i dont care about the car i can still be careful, paddock bashers are for the nasty shit haha. i just want it so i no that im not going to get stuck no where if im on my own and i no that its capable

The OP asked "What's so BAD about coilies? That is what I answered.... Not being negative, just stating facts.
If he asked "What is so good?" there would have been a very different answer.

Mitch1991 wrote: hahah well whats good about them compared to leafys ? They have a nice smooth front clip and grille. The white faced gauges are good. The injection moulded plastic door trims are good. They have a wider track than leafy's but ruin it with positive offset wheels. G13BA engine in coily runs multirib pulleys so upgrade to EF 110A alt is easy.

Compared to a leafy? Quieter interior, look a little nicer and aircon in some. I would say comfort as far as plush ride goes would be on par with a leafy if the springs and shocks aren't shagged or dodgey stiff aftermarket leaves. Poor ride in sierras has alot to do with the (lack of) wheel base.

Mitch, your plans already exceed what can feasibly be done to a coil sierra without major reengineering of the suspension, and the unique front axles will be at or beyond breaking point with your planned tyres.
It seems like you are pretty keen on one regardless, and It's for exactly the reason people are attracted to them - surely "coil springs must offer more flex and a better ride"
It's not true. It's actually very hard (as in "redesign and re-fabricate the suspension" hard) to get a coil sierra to flex more than a leaf sierra. 32's or 33's would mean you should be looking at cromo front axles, (remember a 33" tyre is 7" taller than stock - reckon a hilux needs axle upgrades to run a 38" tyre?) None exist for the coil sierra.
Coilers look nicer and are smoother and quieter than a leaf sierra, but by the time you get a coil sierra to run a 32/33" tyre it won't be much better than a leaf sierra on road.
Steve.

Mitch1991 wrote: Fuck this has made my decision harder now It sort of seemed like you'd already kind of made your mind up. Don't ask a question if you're not prepared for the answer! If you are happy with the size and utilitarian nature of a sierra, just get a leaf car. They are cheaper and much easier to work with. Steve

Mitch1991 wrote: Fuck this has made my decision harder now To simply things these are your options as I see it Buy a coily but throw your dreams of 33" tyres and decent flex out the window and stick to smaller 30" tyres and tamer tracks. Buy a leafy and run any tyres you like up to about 36" on zook diffs with chromo's, have a proven flexible setup easily, embarrass all your mates with big trucks and 35's but put up with the more rugged looks and slightly worse NVH levels.

You also mention that you want some thing more comfortable than your Hilux, well if you have a Coiley on 33's then I can guarantee it won't be any better. But atari4x4 wrote: i'll make the decision easier for you coily's are gay says the hair dresser who owns a two door Vitara...

Mitch1991 wrote: coming from a leaf and torsion bar hilux Maybe this is a better analogy for you, do you now realise that it's hard to mod up your IFS torsion bar Hilux and are thinking maybe I should have got an earlier model leafy Solid axle Hilux that would more easily accommodate mods for say a 33" tyre. Well if you you go and buy a Coiley Sierra you are doing the exact same thing again except with a Suzuki. Once you have the coiley you will be thinking the same thing, maybe I should have got a earlier model leafy Sierra that would more easily accommodate mods for say a 33" tyre....
