just wondering if anyone knows if superior drop shackles are the same size as a standard shackle when pinned back?

I don't actually know , but i thought they would be the same length as 2inch extended shackles when pinned, as you would wan them to clear your big 31s when pinned for road driving.

thanks joeblow for a straight answer. i spoke to an engineer and they can be engineered if they are the same length pinned as a standard shackle. thats my reason for asking.

apprently there is a fair amount of work in getting the lengths right
and also funnily enough you need to use pretty solid springs that dont open up on droop to pry them open as there is a fair wack of twisting force on them, so you lose it in the springs to gain it in the shackles
IMO you can get more flex from well set up springs and normal shackles

ok Standard length sierra shackles: 70mm (centre of pin to centre of pin)
Climax Shackles: Closed (assume that this is centre of pin to centre of pin) 100mm (over an inch longer then standard)
Open 200mm
I will put something together to show you how you could use standard closed length and open climax length if that is what sort of lengths you want?

and my result:
Note second picture is upside down.
This using standard sierra bushes, M12 Bolts (same diametre as standard), the pin to hold it together is 6mm round bar, and more importantly they are at exactly 70mm when closed and open up to 200mm. Will do up proper dimesnioned, A3 drawing of it this is just the ideation. (note the rectangle out of the side is just because i was trying to do it quick. it is the allowance for the piece of flat that does not allow the shackle to completely close itself.. Another addition that has not yet been put in is i am going to add another peice in that stops the shackles from folding backwards after full flex.)

thanks for that kenn but umm... what the hell is the difference? You are just running them in a missing link sort of way but how does my design differ from that? (other then my pin up which is needed) could you clarify joe?

listen to this guy any old lengths and angles jsut doesnt work, at best they dont open, at worst they open under braking

yeah he seems pretty smart now i understand what you mean by "getting the lengths right". i thought this was simply reffering to getting the angle right coz the three lengths are known. But now i realise there is not just one possibility of lenghts. 70mm is the only length you got and you need the other two to add to 200mm but it could be a whole bunch of possibilities. I will still do up the dimensioned sheet and try it out, but only flex it in controlled conditions to start with. Or would it be better to abandon the whole thing?

nah i cant do RUF because it cant be engineered.
will try it all out though, the worst that happens is i waste $100 on steel and a day pissing around

i really dont think there is 'more illegal' but the shackles can be swapped for standard a lot easier then you can undrill a spring hanger or undo a weld.
im sure RUF probably has been approved but at the moment im not up for the cash to get anything approved, but there is apparently a loop hole in the shackle law when they can be pinned.
I was really only doing up the designs coz i saw that some people may want to use them, i personally dont want to use them for the reason you stated. The flex comes from somewhere, either the shackles or soft springs not both and i would prefer soft springs. I would try it out because i believe you can not disregard a mod as being bad until you have tested it.

the only reason i came up with these is for the spring over conversions i do. on these the shock still has about 50mm droop after the spring has acheived 'max linear' movement. the centre pivot does not have a bush but a solid spacer, tightening the centre bolt will lock it and adjust pre load for flex. the spacing between pivots is kept close for various reasons, they being the ability to face them forward or back depending on spring and to maintain as little lateral movement as possible. these are only designed for and extra 50mm droop while maintaining excellent road manners. why do i need box tube?.....i don't.
now it appears ALLEN from piranha has taken it upon himself to sell these shackles since i have closed the workshop, something i'm not happy about. this is the reason i have not continued work on his lwb v6 sierra 9hence no updates), and neither will my engineer. until this is resolved i will not be making any in a hurry, and hopefully one of his minions will be reading this!
so to sum up, get your lengths and pivot points right. this is critical for interferences between chassis and or spring, and try keep welding to a minimum.
