Apart from the atlas the LT230 is the choose transfer in mid weight vehicles.
I'm guessing if the 2.0 is staying it'll be force feed in the future.

I'm not ruling that out. It may not be necessary anyway, but I'd like to know that I have a driveline thats up to the task atleast.

My mates buggy has The LT230 behind a 3.8 on 37's, cops a flogging without issue.

You will be right. Just add a roll of duct tape around the tcase for extra reinforcement and call it done

3cyl has a big fat 1990's Defender factory service manual with service info on the LT230 transfer in it (I was flicking through it the other day at his place). That book might have some info you are after in it? Not sure if he has his computer back yet, but I could go bug him this weekend if you want Pete?

Maybe not. Either way, now is the time to remove your glass parts..... not once the build is done.

Was siting there on our deck chairs having a few beers and u see this landy come driving in and hit this bank. Transfercase went bang. Couldnt tell the guy, got in his car and went for it again. First thing we thought was, that's going to be expensive

1.41 ratio was in V8 and 300Tdi 110's - should be easy to find then.
Note there is a 1.667 ratio too, from 4 cylinder petrol 90's and 110's, but they were never sold here.
Steve. Yep. I can get the 1.667 out of the UK, but I really don't need the gearing. 1.4 is the same as the 1L case I have in there now. Thanks for the link.

4.6 12 bolt vitara rears, front and back. Having the side gears re-splined bigger for meatier float axles.

And what size tire are you going to be running? If your only going to run 4.6s diff and a 1 liter (or equivalent) case would you not be limited to tire size (say a 30)?

Not with 4.6 diffs. Would be pretty good with the 2.0L also. 3.7's and 1L transfer with 31's was JUST bearable. 3.9's made it pretty good. 4.6's and 33's with more power would be fine.

Here is how I look at it.
I am running Vitara motor, gearbox, diffs. The only thing missing is the transfer.
The 2L runs a 27" tyre standard ( I think). It has 4.6 diffs, manual gearbox (3.6ish:1), 1:1 transfer.
So that gives a ratio of 16.56:1 in high first, 4.6:1 in 4th or 3.68:1 in 5th..... on 27's.
With the 1.4:1 LT230, I will have the following.....
4.6:1 diff, manual gearbox, 1.4:1 transfer.
So that makes 23.18:1 1st, 6.44:1 4th and 5.152:1 in 5th. SO by my calculations that 29% lower than standard vitara gearing.
GIven that a 33% tyre is 6" taller my calcs put it at roughly 18% larger, changing the speedo reading by about 22%.
So after all this crap..... on 33's, I will have MORE High range gearing than a standard 2L vitara.

And with the above gearing, I get a 5th gear rpm of 3300@100. On 33's.

Yo Zook, I have a mate around the corner who is a land rover nut & mechanic so I will find what you need to know. you do realise that it weighs about the same as your Zook??? They are F*$king heavy I've changed a couple & man... wow. Defender & Disco gearing is different for sure.

20D = 1.667 (2.5 N/A 110),
22D = 1.410 (all 4Cyl 90/110 bar above),
25D = 1.410 (V8 110 LT 85),
26D = 1.003 (RR Classic 3 speed auto),
27D = 1.192 (early RR Classic),
28D = 1.222 (RR and Disco I),
29D = 1.192 (V8 90 LT 85),
32D = 1.222
34D = 1.410 (2.0 Disco I),
36D = 1.211
38D = 1.211
40D = 1.211 (NAS/Japan 90&Disco),
41D = 1.211 (Disco II, diff lock stud),
