Hi Guys,

My BFG ATs have been great, but after 100,000kms they are done. I can't afford $290 a corner for the BFGs again. I have got my choice down to 2 options.

Maxxis 751 $175

Khumo KL78 $185

as you can see price is negligible..Anyone expereince either or both of these?

Unfortunately I am at the point where the only 4bying I do is slick/rough roads for camping and occsaionly sand. I am happy to take on peoples advice on different tyres, as long as the tyres are the same price or cheaper.

They are for 94 Vitara LWB.

I have personally uses the maxxis 751's on a sierra, patrol, 80 series and a hilux and i think they are a great tyre. Wear very well even on those larger cars and are pretty good in the sand. Seem to be a fairly strong tyre considering the rock driving I did on them without a flat. Dont know the khumo's but I would definitely by 751's if i wanted AT's

I'm running the kl78 31" on my lwb vitara, I've done about 5000km on them. Bit noisy on tar but work well on rocks and sandy dirt I would recommend them for a good all-round cheap AT tyre.

Got the Maxxis 771's on the missus's Discovery. Havn't done that much offroad with them but they seem ok on the tar and quite good on the dirt.

I found the 751 fine until you venture anywhere wet. Hopeless in mud or even wet grass. Great on road and fine on rock and dry dirt.

oh really? That's good to know, cause the only time i'd be using them off road would be camping, which will be grass and mud/clay (but not deep)

anyone else had experienve with the khumo's in these conditions?

i ran the Maxxis 751 in a 235/75/15 on my vit for ages, took me everywhere for 2yrs (mud,sand,rock) couldnt fault them. highly recommend them.

I ran the maxxis on one of our work utes for a couple of years, they wear very very well grip the road well and run quiet. mud they are average, but I'd be very supprised if the kuhmo's were much better, its a result of tread design not brand. they are AT's the only way they would be better in mud is if the blocks were bigger and further apart, and them they'd be muddies
anyway the maxxis 751 are a good long running tyre IMO. I dont use them any more as we swiched to the bighorn muddy it was better for our uses

apparently they wear really well and work in moderate mud.
we had a set on for a month or two but one of the boys wrote the car off and it was over summer from memory so I can't offer you any first hand there

Our local tyre place stopped selling farmers 751s, and now sell them 753s. (unless of course they specify a certain tyre)

They work much better in mud and are quite quiet. Granddad must have had them on his 'Cruiser for 40'000kms and they're barley worn. They're hard as rock though.

I had 751's on my sierra for a couple of years and I have no complaints. For an AT tyre they've got plenty of grip for the terrain you're talking about and they bag out quite well. I agree with zukenutter about their poor wet grass performance but for an AT they hold their own. They were pretty good in the sand and most mud/dirt tracks but as you'd expect they are just as rubbish as any other AT in wet clay.

What are the 751/753 like on tar in the wet?

I have almost been steered away from these as there are a fair few reviews along the lines of "A death trap in the wet on tar...went back to BFG ATs". Personally I think BFG AT's were pretty bad in the wet. Manageable though.

At the end of the day, I could afford BFGs again. It just means a few more pays. I just didn't think I needed the BFGs extra cost to get better sidewalls etc, when I only use them (now) on (mostly) groomed firetrails off road.

I had the maxxis 771, i think its now called the 700. Quiet and wore well, thats my recomendation in the maxxis A/T's.

BFG A/T's are crap in the wet once near half worn.

Well I never had a problem with mine in the wet until they were about 4 years old and started to get a little hard. I was just speaking to a bloke at work about them and he put 751's on his missus' mazda tribute and he swears by them too.

no worries. I just found out an old fella here at work has 751s on his troopy, pulling 2.5tonne of caravan and 2.5tonne of troopy(loaded) and has had no understeer issues in the wet. He said he has only done 7000km on them. The last ones he had was 771s and said they lasted a long time and had no issues either. (he's one of those guys that does around Australia type trips reguarly, so he's been on plenty of different conditions.

Looks like the 700s are more aggresive according to maxxis. (70-30 road-offroad, vs 751, 75-25). I actually thogutht the 700 looks more like a road tyre then AT. Shows what I know!

Go and have a look at a 700 and a 751 in a store side by side. 700 had deeper tread.

the 751 are really good on the road in the wet, the 753 's I hardly drove the vehicle they we on but the boys liked them.
bfg AT's are deadly in the wet imo , one of the worst tyres Ive driven on especially on wet roads

i ran the maxxis AT on my sierra for a few months there. i hate them, only because this car was purely an offroad car (tyres were free, stole them off my brother when he went muddies and put them on my rims), i got them with about 90%, and used them for sand and mud. mud, they were horrible obviously, sand they were good until sand dunes where they weren't aggressive enough. as for tarmac, they're fantastic. in the wet, even with my mini spool in the rear they grabbed the road... i could make them step out with a good amount of throttle and sharp turn, but theyre waaay better than the BFG AT's on wet roads. probably the only place theyre better though...

got the 751s.

$660 vs $1160 for BFG's = $500 saving.

they are much quieter than the BFGs.

The don't seem to be so 'floaty' as the BFGs - they seem more stable.

I'll give them a bit more time plus a run in the wet and report back.

I got 96,000 km of the BFGs. And I still had 3mm of tread on the rears...if only I rotated more often then every 25,000 ....doh!

My rangie had BFG AT's on it when a got it. Replaced them with KL71's after the 1st run of wet weather we had, shocking in the wet.

Just to clarify for future searchers. You are saying the BFGs were terrible, or are you saying the KL71s were terrible in the wet?

BFG's were terrible, the KL71's are a lot better.

Depends on what you mean...

I bought 4 tyres the other day for $660 ($715 with an alignemnt)

The BFGs that got me 96,000 was with 5 tyres in the rotation.
