what do you need to make this thing tick cairns27 ? just a sat sim card? does most of the big mainstream providers (such as telstra) offer contracts for these?

Telstra do offer a sat service not sure on the other majors, Optus etc. think Globalstar went broke, not sure. One mob had satellites falling out or the sky a couple of years ago

Do a search on ExplorOz. This question comes up about once a fortnight... Apparently you need a Telstra sim with international roaming turned on (pre OR post-paid!) to operate the phone - then it's just an expensive call rate (roaming will cost you for both incoming and outgoing calls) and you use your existing number for that sim.

I had this phone connected to the motorola satellite network, $200.oo connection fee and on a $35.oo @ mth plan.Out calls were $2.oo @min, and incoming $5.oo{paid by the caller ofcourse.] I bought a Inmartsat phone 'cause I was told they would be able to be use as a modoem. That was 18mths ago, still hasn't happened yet. This phone is prepaid, $1.oo @ min for outcalls, up to $37.oo @ min incoming. Texts to both networks cost $0.45. Inmarsat is geo-stationary, so you get feed back some times, satellite is higher than the orbital iridium, so sound travels further. Iridium is oribital, and has somewhere between 56 & 76 satellites{76 is the atomic number of iridium, hence the name.]

No mate sorry the caller has to pay, that's why you tell people to text ya, and you'll ring them back.
Iridium will be the best system when they finally get the 76 satellites up, the rumour is that motorolla own all sat phone systems.
bye
