I assume that you are using proper flare nut/pipe spanners? Two of them - 1 for the pipe and one for the receptical.

If you havnt got access to flare nut spanners then try vice grips. Yea it's dodgy but if they don't slip they shouldnt wreck the nut.

Trade Tools here in Brisbane hae a vast range of tools for pretty good pricing. The brand they seem to revolve around for hand tools is FORCE. They are quite good and not overpriced.
Try eBay. A good set of Flare nut spanners is very useful to have.

Ive always just used a 10mm open end.
Quick hit the spanner with your hand while holding the open end on the nut, and they release with a snap.

Well, i was two thirds of the way through and the back one would not budge without feeling like it was about to strip like a chick from the gold coast..... going wheeling early in the morning so i just made an opening on a ring spanner and it worked a treat XD.

Well done. Some people will tell you modifying tools is sacrilege. My father was a mechanic in the 60's and was chastized for modifying 'good' tools to do a job he could not buy the right tool for. Guess who came to him to borrow a tool they could not buy... the very same persons. Today we are lucky there is a tool available for every coneceivable job, but if money is an issue and you can make one cheap - good for you!

A good method IF you have a bit of room to work with. Two hammers, hold one against the fitting, hit with the other on the oposite side. The force you hit with obviously depends on the size of the gear your working with, i wouldn't flog the piss outta something line a brake line. Usually loosenes them up a bit.

One other tip for a bolt in a tight spot is so join 2 ring spanners together. by putting one ring end over the open end of the other you can make a 'breaker' bar that is a custom length depending on the size spanners that you use. A breaker bar may not always fit in some places or you may not have one hand. Also lets you hold one spanner and then you can pull the other one quickly to put a bit of shock through the nut. like this:
