i'm looking at a "challenge flexi-glass" fibreglass canopy for my sierra. it is the rear section only, how hard are the front sections to come by and will the canopy fit over my roll bar?

Front sections are pretty hard to come by.

You may need to post a pic of your rollbar to get an answer about the rear section fitting that doesn't involve the consultation of a clairvoyant.

You have a few front sections getting around, Tjm, flexiglass, maruti, freemax.

NONE of them will work with other brands, u need to find the right front section. From what I've worked out looking at rear and front sections for sale is, Tjm front sections slot over there rear sections and join without seeing the b pillar, flexiglass front sections leave a gap when joining to the rear price and you can see the b pillar, maruti suit the small enclosed cab section and also join seamless, freemax tops sit 2 inches higher than all of the others.

Also to help you out, flexiglass tops have a square hump in their roof sections, Tjm are flat. Best way is to ask the buyer for a test fit before you buy.
