HEY im pulling my hair out at this stage with frustration  :rambo:

my 1.3tbi sierra is running a el ef falcon 110amp alternator (was on it when i bought it) and i had suspicions of it being broken when the battery light kept staying on the dash whilst running.

So i put a mulitmeter on it and startup/idle it would sit around 12.5v then once i revved it, it would drop to as low as 11v so out that came bought a cheapo from the wreckers.
wacked it in and it did the same plus siezed the pulley and stripped the V belt so i took the belt off alternator out bought new belt swapped alt for another wacked them in and same thing again. :?
SO i ordered a brand new alternator put it in and GUESS WHAT the same thing happend so i took the belt off and it started and idled fine put the belt back on and struggled to start again and IF the pulley did spin it would get Cook eggs and bacon HOT and make the belt feel like a P platers commodore rear tyres after doin some single spinners :rambo: .
I messed around loosening and tightening the belt in different places to see if it would change anything but nope nothing when i can get it to idle i put the multimeter back on and the voltage still reads retartedly like before and most of the time it would squeal its head off.

im really bewildered to what is going on and just about over it really does anyone have any idea what it could be?
could the alternator be running backwards causing the revvs to drop while revving??

thanks for looking at this thread and hopefully i can rectify this problem soon so i can go back to wheeling  and breaking something else  Armsup

Are you running a V belt ? It will not last without huge tension. You need multirib.
Is the alt getting hot or just the pulley/belt?

Have you fitted a relay to the sense wire so the alt reads battery voltage not whatever struggles to get through the loom?

Power from battery to relay.
Relayed power to sense wire.
Relay activated by ignition.

Will that help with the engine idle dripping when you turn lights on etc ?

Ok ive got the alt pulley from siezing turns out i was tightening the lower bracket too much causing the alt casing to pull in on itself and the the voltage is good now sitting around 14v wen holding revs so im happy with that. But the pulley and belt still get heaps hot and as soon as i loosen tension it just squeels not sure what is causing it ill keep fiddleing until i can find out

It is getting hot because the belt is slipping on the pulley.
A V belt cannot handle the load a 100 odd amp alternator puts on it... Thats why EF EL all run multirib as does any other car/truck/bus/boat with more than about an 80A alt.

Well it could be the multirib im not sure i thought they were called v belts but all the pulleys have been changed to suite the same type of belt as the alternator.... The belt has 3 prongs on it ( if thats what there called ill put a pic up later of it) maybe thats not enought for it is that what you mean?

Sounds like you have a 3pk belt... Barina/Swift pulleys?
I don't think 3pk is enough, my G16B runs Vit pulleys at 5pk and my belt often squeels on start up but never for long.

So the option is too look for some vit pullies then? Would it be a hard swap at all? Or i could just get a vitara or commodore motor and start again ;)

I am running an el falcon alt. on a 8 valve 92 Vit. I had to grind a way a little of the alt casing to alow for enough adjustment to get belt tight. The belts need to be good and tight to stop squealing. I am pretty sure the belt is 4PK and I run an 825.
