Vehicle: Sierra Shooting Buggy

I have an older leaf spring Sierra that we use as a shooting buggy, it travels on a trailer and will never be registered. My plan is to convert it to a Vitara auto gearbox (to free up my gear change hand). I plan to use a modified and complete Vitara rear axle (5.12 ratio). I am after info on what is required to alter the front diff to a 5.12 ratio, I have an old Vitara front diff centre, I understand I use the crown and pinion gears but what other tricks are required? I am sure this would have been covered in detail previously so if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. Cheers.

the R&P from a 5.12 Vitara front will fit a sierra 1.3 diff

Because ring gear is slimmer,
may need something to stop cross pins falling out.
Many solutions to that.

That's the way it's done.

Your older front front Sierra carrier will have the stronger 4 spider gears, but as Christover said, the OD of the case will be smaller than the ID of the ring gear and you need SOMETHING LIKE THIS to retain the pins. Alternatively, you could fit the marginally weaker 2 spider centre from the Vitara and not need the retainer sleeve. You need to have a good understanding of diffs to correctly set up the Pinion depth and R+P backlash, or get a Diff workshop to do it for you. Have a read of the Differential section of the WORKSHOP MANUAL.

Vitara rear diffs use a larger ring n pinion,
so rears can't be used in Sierras.
Only the fronts.
I assume GV is the same.
