What should I ask for? Basic bottom end rebuild, 3 angle valve grind in the head? Also would they be able to regrind the cam for more oomf. Or just buy a HAWK regrind from Lowrange and have them fit that?

And how much should I expect to pay all up?

Tips, Advice please.

thanks zooky, That's pretty much what I had in mind what a basic refresh would entail, hmm is it worth getting oversized pistons, or only if the bores are scored enough to warrent it? Just thinking to get the most capacity out of the little 1.6L hoping to bore it out close to 1690cc or something...
As for the head, 3 way valve grind, port match intake and exhaust ?

if you leave the bore at the stock specs you can get the 40thou over sierra high compression pistons to bring up the compression, the only problem you pace then is the wrist pins...

otherwise shave the head a little to gain a bit more compression

get them to clean up the ports on the head for better flow

the opportunities are andless lol

Engine mods can be endless depending on what you want and what you're willing to spend but some things for consideration
Having the engine balanced is a worthwhile thing to do. Makes it rev smoother and sweeter. The difference can sometimes be quite a lot.
3 angle valve jobs are a good idea and consider getting the valves done as well so that they are 1 degree out from the seat (ie, seat = 45 degrees, valve = 46 degrees). Makes for a sweeter seal but can be hard on valves and seats.
New valve springs (guessin you might be getting them anyways) is a good idea while your there.
Port matching and deburring can be beneficial but mostly in the top end of the rev range
CC'ing the head can help as it ensures all combustion chambers are equal and therefor giving the same amount of bang. This works well in combo with balancing.
Bumping the compression up a bit by shaving the head or block is worthwhile but not too much I reckon.
Make sure the block is checked so it is square
If the cyls aren't scored, leave them original size I reckon that way if you need to you can go up later
A new cam is better than a regrind but choose one that has a good copmpromise between lowend tork and highend hp I reckon

I would put a 1.6 in instead of pouring money into the 1.3

i just paid 2400 for a g13a a full reco drive in drive out from suziworld.
cant comment yet tho ive only driven 10kays.
but it hasnt blown up yet!

That will teach me not to skim read

The rebuild on my G16b cost just over 3g. Included brand new head (600+). New pistons that were machined and ceramic coated. Balanced etc etc.

My full rebuild on a G16a was about $1200, 40 thou bored out etc.
Only thing I didnt do was replace oil pump. Did it all my self asides the machining though

Depends on how it all measures up mate, if it doesn't need boring, Don't! if the block is still flat don't bother decking it. If the heads are flat, don't skim them.

Rings only( if you don't need to bore it), Mains, big ends, thrust washers, oil pump..... should see the bottom end fine.
Get the vales cut properly, check your springs & valve guides & of course new valve stem oil seals.
If you have heaps of cash to throw then you could start looking at Balancing & blue printing. Cam & port matching, etc.

find a shop thats clean and has lots of trade work coming in and out and give them the engine and let them tell you what it needs

Balancing the crank could be pricey as if there hollow like the g13b or gti the engine builder might be reluctant to clock it up , not many peeps would touch mine (crank) all though it would benefit ur revs a lot.my g13b sohc revs to 8 grand on standard carb with out a balanced crank.I'm gonna open a huge can of worms here cos I might have missed it but. Is ur engine a double over head cam ? Cos there are a lot of gti performance parts around u could get a fair bit of power there is a kit available in bris from suzi sport to convert the gti dizzy mounting so u could use the gti cams.but if its single cam u can get lumpy ones pretty cheap I paid $1600 for a freshen up .because there non interference u can shave a lot off and get away with It as long as ur internals can cope, but at the end of the day a 4gaez front clip is only $3000 to $3500 Wat iv heard any way so maybe u need to budget realy well first I was going to go a g16 but once u find one and install it it wasn't worth my wile not that its not worth doing just not for me.:)

I'd let a good engine builder TELL you what they think needs doing ;)
If you give them your budget they can adjust accordingly

Truly in the end that was what I did,I mean maybe get the head shaved a bit but u could dream all day and get no were .I meen we only own suzis because there cool & cheap,well there supposed to be LOL :D

Let the shop look after the refurb. If you have budget left over for performance work, then tell them that too. They will let you know what can be done for your money, and what gains to expect. Keep in mind that timing and fuel may need adjusting to accomodate any performance work done to the motor, so make allowances in your budget for that also.

And any engine rebuilder worth going to will crack test the block as standard procedure.

yes an no, if you specifically want something ask for it. otherwise chances are it wont get done. ie. if you want to go 40thou over for the marhinal increase in capacity ask otherwise they will go do the bare minimum. if you want it balanced, ask for that most basic refurbs dont include that.

if you just want a straight re-furb then ask for that, if you want a performance build then you need to ask for that. noone is telling anyone how to do their job just asking for what they would like, or suggesting things that might help achieve the desired goal.

there are a shitload of shops out there quite willing to rip you off (hence why i do all my building myself) if you at least have an idea/understanding of what you want then you can get the best possible outcome for you.

that being said also let the shop know what your end goal is as they "should" know what they are doing so may have more ideas on how to achieve that teh best possible way.
