My rear airlocker has a mind of it's own.

It has always had the compressor come on every minute or so. Then when i went wheeling it just blew air and wouldn't engage. the next day it was solid for 20mins. The next day it turned on every 45seconds, the last week it's works fine everyday :?

Everytime it is spewing air i check the diff breather and make sure the air is coming from the diff and not from any other fitting.

Is there any other more current tech then this: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9858&hilit=airlocker+leaking

air leaks depend on a whole range of issues, they not only can stem from the diff but all the other fittings you may have on you're air delivery system.

setup is critical, the smallest amount of dirt, particularly at the o-ring side will cause it to leak a little. all the the problems i have see have been a poor fitting/ rush job situation. ask all the people i have set diffs up for and it won't be leaking from the diff end.

many times the leak is actually caused by people not setting up pre-load correctly on the side bearings, and as the diff loads up it flexes putting pressure on the o-rings.

how many people here have a test rig to check pressur before instalation? a simple test rig will show mistakes before the diff is installed.

Just a guess, take off the bulk head fitting and see if the copper tubing is secured in properly by the oring

I had the diff pulled out and the seal replaced even before i had driven on it. i'd put money on it being the same seal again.

the first seal spewed air out, the second one made the diff seal for about 2mins......

is the surface its sealing on polished smooth?

Have seen this reccomended.

This thread makes me tempted to sell mine and go harrops..

How are the diff bearings? Float in the carrier bearings can cause air leaks.

10 bucks sais it's the locking tab on the seal housing side. When this is tightened it places a little pressure on the seal housing. When the diff is used, and the seal housing rotates a little it can ramp up on the locking tab causing the housing shift and leak air. A small tap with a screw driver to knock the locking tab up and away from the seal housing is all that is needed.

and tim i gave the shop airlockers and i never pulled them out of the packaging. so im guessing there the finish ARB left them at.

I had a shop do it all, and they charged me for new carrier bearings becase jimny ones don't fit on an airlocker, so im going to guess the bearings are fine. That and my backlash is right and there super quiet on the highway.

And if i can't get a better promising seal or something, ill pull it out and give it a tap joe.

I havn't lost all faith, my front has worked perfectly everytime and holds for about 20mins before a little top up from the compressor.

I had a issue with my lux or sierra.sitting there on the spot would seal good,driving or jacked up with one wheel off the ground would leak constant.came down to preload on the carriers I think from memory.quick adjust and was good by my mate from arb

Take your third member out and take off the locking seal housing(don't have to touch any of the bearings)
Have a look at the seal in the housing could be split or they can easerly be twisted if not assembled carefully.

Carrier bearings been mention twice so I would be looking at that first

okay, ill pull it out and see. Just waiting to hear back from a guy who is working with ARB to design a new seal for the airlockers. Hoping to be a tester of these. :D

X2 on that last part. Front works fine, my rear does that same thing 31zooks. I'll be making a trip back to arb next week I think....

They tend to suck due to lack of attention when being fitted. I've only ever seen 2 leak due to faulty parts....all the rest (shit loads) have been fitted poorly.


Chuck an Eaton in. Down the track you will have more issues due to the too senstive Torrington bearing they use on the electromagnet.

Never had a single issue welded/auto.. But I want it off in the front sometimes..

You would think after fitting a couple over the years that they have been available they would be able to get it right a bit more often though :wink:

That's assuming a level of personnel continuity and a standard of training that may not be the case.

The St Peters ARB branch (probably the closest to Sydney) is currently without a locker tech, they have to get a guy from another branch to come in for a couple of days and try to schedule all the locker work for when he can be there.

If they're that stretched for the level of expertise we'd all like to think we're paying for it's not hard to imagine how standards would be difficult to maintain.

Not an excuse, but possibly a reason.

I didn't get mine set up by ARB either. I had a specialist diff and gearbox shop do mine.

There's a reason there called air leakers :D

Monley ur front works because it as fitted in the shed after a few beers
The rear leaks cause it was fitted buy arb :)

Sierra dan, i haven't had one leak when i've built it correctly, when i've bench tested them the best i've got an air locker to hold air pressure was for 2 days @100PSI.

If your having problems maybe you need to look at your installation and not the product

Took the jimny in to get the rear locker looked at. They pull it out to have a look at it and the issue was the seal was damaged, and the face that the seal goes into was also damaged :? Also the bit that holds the seal ( i think?) was twisting on the sealing face, hence the leak. Cause of issue - incorrect setup. They didn't want risk replacing the damaged part's with a chance that it might still leak, so the whole thing is getting replaced.

Still wheeling tomorrow? They have a tendency to chew seals. My Tritons locker got a oil seal replaced...

ARB rang today and said there is a leak (no sh*t) but they don't want to do the warranty job because they didn't install it. They want me to take it back where I got it done, even though that isn't an ARB dealer anymore. Said they could do the job but they'd have to charge for parts and labour.

Also said it might just be because of flex in the housing (even after I reminded him that there was a steel diff housing in it) that apparently Jeeps suffer from too. First I've heard of anything like it.

So long story short I'll still have a leaker for the trip next week.

FFS.
