Grinder. Put a slice down it and pry it off. The boot will slide it off though.

It's a tight fit but they come off. Let the rubber invert if that makes sense?

have these been cut off before?

the solid black thing (shifter) is rubber filled & bonded to the shifter shaft for NVH dampening

The boot WILL come off. Pull harder, it won't rip.

The boot slides over the thick black bit. To replace the spring, you cut the old one off, and slide the new one down over the thick black section. It will take some force. If you aren't sure, try and slide the new one on before you cut the old one off.
The locking collar stays.

When I heated mine to bend it after a body lift, I wrapped a wet rag around the hollow part with the rubber insert to stop it burning. This worked ok. I assume you are heating the stick after a B/L??

NT transfer shifters don't have the rubber in the stick. May be easier to use one of them.

I bent a gearstick enough to make it work with a BL with a near empty gas bottle, a hammer and a block of wood and had no dramas, you must have been going pretty bloody hard!
