if it backfires either of them when cranking when you swap them timing might be off, normally they will run with 2 leads swapped and not pop till you rev it to advance it

cam timing? have you seen this run? I would assume worst case and check it all, cam timing, rocker clearance, compression

then it will be something dumb like fuel hses back to front :)

hhmmm, sounding worse now!! We did replace the waterpump AND timing belt while it was out.. my mate (mechanic by trade) put the timing belt back to the same marks.. i'll ask more about what he did though. Should i check the firing order is right?? But if this wasnt right, once again wouldnt it backfire all the time etc??

Yes you should check it, because I had the same problem with mine. I had the firing order wrong because I was used to working on the G13 where the dizzy points the other side of the engine. It changes things because I assumed the rotor button spun in one direction where is actually went the other way! It did actually run like this but it sounded really crook.

So yeah turn it over and see which way the rotor button goes and check your firing order.

ooo another one to think about, does al the bits that have power when cranking still have power at straight ignition? maybe its going to fire but eh power goes away?

Nah then it would try to run whilst cranking instead of firing only when he gets off cranking. Could be the timing or firing order but that drop to 9 volts at cranking is still weird. Did that go away when you hooked it up to another car? Could that be an alternator issue?

When i hooked it up to the other car, it improved (approx 12 or 13V while cranking for memory??) I'm heading away to the west coast for a few days tonight (was planning on going in the zook  ) so i will look into again next week. Thanks HEAPS for all of your help.. hopefully one day we can all get together and get on the cans.. i will have to buy yous a few!! Have a good easter :)

Hello again peoples!! well i just got home from the 4x4 trip, and hit the key, hoping all the problems fixed themselves.. but nope  Did a few more tests.. the firing order is right (1,3,4,2 witht he rotor button going anti-clockwise). The dizzy has 11.66V with the key "on".. but this drops to 6.4V while cranking??!!

where does the dizzy power come from?
The cranking + wire comes from the 1.3 lume, into the comp. One of the dizzy wires comes from the comp, direct to the dizzy, the other comes from the dizzy through the injectors. This same wire also goes to many other places (airflow sensor, purge VSV, ISC valve, EGR VSV, fuel pump relay, ECU power relay, back to the comp a few times, and finally goes to the + battery.

so its an ignition power feed to most of the sensors and feeds power into the ecu as well?

youd want a relay on that one, plus I would think something on that line either has a bad connection or is drawing heaps of current

have tried putting a relay onto that wire.. no good :( I'm still wondering if it could be the timing? Maybe it is firing on TDC on exhaust? Cause the cylinders are flooding with fuel after 15 secs or so of winding. Will also check the plug leads today..

I just checked the fuel just to make sure, i disconnected it from just before the rack.. it pumped for the 2 secs or so while the ign was "on".. then it stopped. This is normal though isnt it? I then thought i would test the plug leads..
Results..
lead 1: 3.66
lead 2: 2.62
lead 3: 2.17
lead 4: 1.72

Is this ok?? I will make sure the timing light flashes when the timing mark is on TDC when my misses gets home (need her to turn the key!!)
I hope im getting closer!!

how far will the spark jump from the lead to the block while cranking
(this is bad to do really but gives you an idea of spark voltage)

fuel pump wise everything sounds ok.
as for checking timing. just put power to the starter motor trigger wire from under the bonnet. you wont need to wait than.
lead 1: 3.66
lead 2: 2.62
lead 3: 2.17
lead 4: 1.72

is this in K ohms? as in 3.66k ohm. if so they are ok. MAX allowd is 12k ohms. some people say alow 1k per foot of lead

Was in K ohms.
Just checked the timing.. the timing light wont work!! I went and tried it on my ute.. worked fine. Went back up to the zook, tried it again, still nothing!! I tried it on no: 1 lead, then no: 2 lead. Both didnt work. I made sure the ign was on, had it hooked up to the battery correctly etc..

You were saying earlier it would fire once when you stopped cranking. Do you get a single flash from the timing light when you stop? It's got to be a lack of voltage to the distributor. Does the 16 valve run off the standard 1.3 coil?

Didnt see one no.. i'll check again though. The coil AND igniter are both the originals off the 1.6 vitara..

Do you have the specs to check the igniter is ok? Maybe its toast and isn't feeding the signal to spark to the coil.

do you have a check engine light hooked up?

Nope... not as yet. hehehe, should i :?
Another thing, i just went up and played with the timing light again.. and it only flashes (once) when ever i let the key off the cranking position. When this happens, the motor tries to fire. So it still seems like the dizzy/coil isnt getting full power (untill that last split second when the key is released).

run a wire from teh battery straight to the coil positive, you dont have enough juice to make a spark

then when it runs go find where the power is going, that IS the source of the drama

I tried running a wire from the battery + to the + coil.. still nothing
It did however increase the cranking volts to the coil from 5/6 volts (without wire) up to 8.8 volts (with wire). Found a few things i thought could have been the prob, like dirty earths etc.. but still nothing. I looked into what Joe said about having the check eng light hooked up.. it seems like it may complete a circuit when it is hooked up? I did hook it up with the other wire (which does eventually go to the dizzy), but still nothing.

Just letting everyone know that she is finally going!!! Turns out it was the coil!! I didnt expect that, cause it was pushing out a spark, but not enough!! Plus, i thought worst case scenario (as i hadnt had it going since the conversion). But she goes now, and im heading out this weekend playing! Thanks HEAPS to everyone that helped :)

Nice work zooker. I don't know whether to laugh or swear when 'massive' problems turn out to be something small e.g one washer missing off one of my gearbox bolts ceasing reverse and 5th gear.

Hello agaib!! Well GGRRRRR  Went to go playing yesterday.. and she overheated!! Was going along the highway.. got about 10k down the road.. and up came the temp gauge :( Just wondering what other radiators peoples have used to help with this problem?? So, i was using a 1.3 radiator, with my new 1.6 EFI.. should i try and get a vitara radiator.. if so, is a fairly easy fit?? Tar muchly :)
