I got it welded back together, so hold off for now. ill see how it goes. cheers guys

it's probably a bit late but when I had to do it, I just put the shifter in a vice and got some vice-grips to twist and pull the fucker off, wasn't easy but finally got it off. Then I just got the machinist to make me a nylon bush to replace the rubber from the inside.
