ok, so i have a soft top 91 Sierra, after much reading i cant carry extra fuel inside the car and my idea of mounting a carrier on the tail gate is now out the window im back to looking at making a roof cage, problem is i have no idea how to go about it, let alone how to do it.

what i need is someone in the western sydney area that can help me with making one or if someone has the mounting stuff already made for sale, i have a welder and an angle grinder but ill be honest, ive never used the welder, lol, i can get materials pretty easily so that wont be a problem and i know where the bottle shop is :)

Your right in saying it's not a good idea to carry fuel inside the car, but being a soft top i'm sure there would be adequate ventilation to do so, even with teh top on. The other option is to make a carrier that hooks over the spare wheel. Easier and cheaper to make and removable for when you do or don't need it.

As long as the cars ventilated, the container is sealed and your not smoking directly on top of it, i dont see what the drama would be. Try to avoid mounting it on the rear door, if you have a tool box or something in the back you can always put it onto something like that.

Easiest way would just go to a camping store and get one of the premade $30 jerry can holders and mount it where ever it fits.

I've got a "Rola" roof rack with basket for sale off my sierra hardtop.
I used to carry fuel and all kinds of things up top!
Looking for $500 for the lot.
Pm me your number if your interested and I will send you some photos!
I'm happy to freight it at your expense?
Cheers
Barney

thanks guys but its not as much the basket as setting the car up to be able to mount one, atm im just looking at options and found a thread on here about strengthening the hinges on the tail gate to handle taking the weight of a jerry can and holder so for now im going that way till i can either get a fibreglass canopy for it or make some kind of frame to mount the basket on :)

thanks again for the offers tho guys :)
