Patrol stuff is either crap, or genuinely crap. There's much better stuff out there.
I woud say that out of the box a set of mqs diffs (with gq cvs) would be as strong if not stronger than hilux. the rear is Defently stronger and the week point in the front end (not that I think it would be week under a zook) is fixed for $80. Hell even the steering "works" with a new draglink. there are a few 350 powered mqs about with 36 inch rubber that cop it pretty hard down here. the rednecks prefer the mq over the lux because lux centers (3rds) can't take the abuse.
also lux won't work for what I want to do. end of story.
yes they are still heavy diffs and sure a set of built wt diffs "might" handle the tires I want to run or the power I want. I doubt they would hold both.

Just wondering what you are basing this statement on, other than for the opinions of tasmanian "rednecks" ?
Hilux diffs are used widely in the drag racing community and are tortured with hard launches on very high grip surfaces with 500-600HP being put to ground.
This one has over 1000HP, and claims to have a standard rear hilux diff, with the only mod being a shortened housing/ long side axle.

Most road cars use a higher gear, ive heard the 4.88, 5.12 do fail. So in a roadie, 4.1/4.33 should be better. Other than putting in a solid pinion spacer, there is not much else that can go wrong.
If Toyota thought they were shit, They would'nt be still making them.
The Hilux diff is widely used because people don't want the weight of a Ford 9".
Pootrol diffs are mega heavy. Not sure on real weights though compared. I had some MQ's for my swb. Then got rid of them.
I'm only basing it on people I know and there experiances. there's a WHOLE lot of lux's about about with cut and shut rear diffs and cruser centers. a lux diff under a zook would be fine and Proberbly never bust. I Defenantly agree with you a good mate of mine has a ae86 drift car with a touch over 350kws at the wheels with a standard lux diff and cig locker and it takes 9000rpm clutch dumps at 100kph.. I'm not at all saying there week I'm just stating what I have been told from people who once again have real world experianc. maby they bust in reverse fairly easy? id still say a mq rear would be stronger again.
not sure on weight Tim I'd say front would be a bit heavyer than lux and rear prob 30kg more, that's just from looking at them.

The Hilux are 8"
Its possible the large cruiser diff would be STRONGER than a 9", as the LC runs a 9.5" rear.
Anyway.
Phil, I don't think you will have any issues with the strength of the MQ diffs on 35's. But what about gearing? There isn't much available for them AFAIK.

yeah I agree. my drive plan so far boosted/straight gas g13b-manualised aw4 - 6.5s - 4.6. that on paper should give me ideal gearing for a revy boosted truck. keep in mind this is being built for offroad use. 35-37s idealy 36in centerpeeds are perfect for tassie.
The only problem I can see is as soon as it leaves the backyard the cop on the bike that pings everyone will be onto you sooner or later. Are there any plans to engineer? It should be easy (obviously not 37's though).

hi Phill, im currently building a setup with a 1ltr on mq's but coils! the mq's were my pick over the lux as i think they will be stronger and such, so your keeping the zook spring setup? i would like to see some pics! good luck with it also there are the Chinese "arb" style air lockers for these diffs on ebay for around 1500 a pair, good luck with the build!
farmer says it all, probably had his usual 3 ton of shit in the back,a sling around the front diff pulling out a tractor in reverse, like hes been doing since he owned it from new

Na, just a hay bale on the back driving through a rough paddock.
This guy is particularly hard on his vehicles though, he had a Tata ute and it lasted him 2 weeks.
i really dont think strength is gunna be an issue in a zook they are made for a 3 tonne car with a lot more power. my mate had one with 36s and while he did munch a few diffs he wasnt exactly soft on his gear i think being a 3rd of the weight and a lot less torque youll be fine
If you stick with a 1.3 and don't run stickies I think you will be ok I used to have mq's under my buggy but with a commo v6 and 38's and they didn't last 2 stages on it's first comp. I blew the front centre, freewheeling hub, rear centre and a rear axle all at the same time. The rear axles are quite brittle and standard gq cv's will fit into the front swivel hubs but the stubs have a different spline count to the mq stubs so you will need to source some gq locking hubs
