Silly question time just wondering if antone knows whetehr it is legal to drive without the (flimsy) doors fitted.

I always pop them on when on road - several people have said don't bother

Cheers

On an LJ? You'd get away with it. Afterall, what protection does a piece of canvas give?

I wheel all the time without doors. I rolled it without doors. I will be making tube doors to make it safer, but just be smart about it.

LJ - Yes but you need to run the factory "door" bar thingo.
Sierra - Nope. Not legal.... i checked with DoT and they said a few years back to make things easy, they made the law that the car has to run what it came out of the factory with... so if you bought a holden drover with stock half doors, that's all you're technically allowed to run, and if you wanted to use sierra full doors you'd have to go through the same application and inspection process as a sierra wanting to run half doors =)

FYI though i've applied to run half doors and its been approved pending inspection...

All that said, no doors is hell fun, this pic is taken while i leant out the door:

This one shows how scary it can be for a passenger, it feels quite unnerving not having anything to stop you falling out of the car =)

if you cut the hinges, the doors actually fit in the back once you slide them off - i just use some of that yoga mat stuff between it all to stop them getting beaten up, and an occy strap to hold it all down - so i can drive to the track doors on, chuck them in the back, wheel it with them off and put them back on for the drive home.

Hey Alien- with doorless LJ's, if you cant find a set of door bar thingies, do you reckon you could get away with using a webbing strap much like jeeps used to use, or a webbing net in place of the door or door bar?

Just curious, my LJ's never ran with doors- and my DJ5 jeep had sliding doors that locked open for driving (until I took them off to save weight)
I went through around 3 to 4 booze buss stops a week for 4+ years and MR Plod never questioned the doors being locked open (or the lack of doors) or the 6 point harness.
Mind you- I got a lot of "WTF is this thing" questions from the coppers, and why is there a big hole in the roof, and why are there rifle racks etc......

i reckon if you didnt have the factory bar your best bet would be to make a replica factory steel bar... i dont think anyone would believe it came stock with netting or webbing =)

the stock LJ door bars are soooo simple, they almost look home-made from the factory! haha

LOL @ atari.

X2. I understand the appeal of doorless, and have driven doorless plenty, but I prefer 1/2 doors. They make me feel more secure.

Cage mounted waist height tube doors are on my agenda. Spaced away more and lower, but panels aren't an option other than skins..

yup - my "half doors" are cut just above the keyhole on that panel line... so sitting in the car theyre pretty much at waist height.

the 2 things i miss most being doorless are my arm rest and my side mirrors! I don't mind the mud spray so much, its easy to have a shower when i get home.

Yup my LJ has the bars that can be used if doors are not there

The doors that I have are half doors anyway with an ANCAP safety rating of - 10...........
