The thing about swb sierra's...is that there's no bloody room for anything!
my 20v sits about 2 inch further forward than a stock 1.3, leaving not a lot of room for a radiator up front. Still can be done with thermos on the front but it leaves the radiator still in a vulnerable position when it comes to victorian slop...which loves to fill up the radiator. so in the eyes of longevity and reliability i think i'm going to run a rear mounted radiator.
Ideas that have been thrown around include:
-mounting radiator and thermos to inside/integrate with tailgate - reinforce tailgate mounts. Run steam pipe along chassis from engine for coolant transport.
-mount radiator with thermos on top of passenger rear wheel arch along the side of the zook thermos facing out.
So far that's it for ideas.
Keep in mind I eventually want to comp this zook in winch comps in vic for fun. A 6 point Cams/CCDA spec cage will be fitted.
I'm liking the tail gate idea, but for strength purposes would consider making the gate permanently shut. This will still also allow me to run a modified full soft top if I want to.
Comments, suggestions, more questions wanted.

hmmm, be interesting to see how the longer pipe will go? Wonder if it will allow the coolant to heat up to much? (the steam pipe along the chassis idea i mean!!)

I'm thinking some sort of steel pipe is going to be stronger than a few metres of radiator hose. It would be fairly vulnerable under the zook even if placed on top of the rail.
It'll work both ways, hot coolant leaving engine will cool down on its way to the radiator and cool coolant leaving the radiator will possibly warm up a touch dependant on ambient temps outside. But in both cases not much to worry about. A good mate has his 80 series rear mounted radiator done with steam pipe and hasn't had any probs.

y not get your full 6 point cage first, then make up some adapters from the two rear bars to hold it up? you could set it on any angle and just make the hole set up bolt on and off from the cage? run insulation between the mounts and the cage to stop it from heating up?

remember that the rad still needs to be higher than the engine or youll need bleed points somewhere, the stock pump wont be able to di it by itself and something like stainless exhaust tube will be plenty, dunno what you mean about steam pipe but even standard weight seamless pipe would be a gazillion times overated to what you need
also try to get some airflow in naturally, youll have a fair amount of time jsut from getting the coolant all right up to temp before it would everheat but thermos wont be able to keep up alone
hehe above your head with a big roof scoop. keep you warm as well

zorst pipe is fine for rear mount radiators, just be sure to run corrosion inhibitor at the correct strength.

think you should use the cage to mount the rad. just runs some stainless steel tube. maybe use 2 electric water pumps? one of flow and one on return?

Problem is I want my zook running before it sits in the shed for another bunch of time getting a cage done....If its built into the tail gate it frees up more space in the back, also more likely to get airflow on the highway as well.
Electric pumps will prob be a good idea. Steam pipe...haha..it was 2am when i wrote that post i meant exhaust pipe in stainless or as shep said normal zorst pipe with rust inhibitor. Thanks for comments guys keep em coming.

if it is built into the back tail gate and is used in comps, the radiator will more than likely be punished with a lot of water and may even have to sit in water while you are winching up a hill or something. Also another thing to think about with it in the back is that your navy may have a hard time getting gear out of the back if there is a hot radiator right at the back of the car. Stuff that is in the back could pose as a fire hazard if it were to roll and rest on the back tailgate.
Just food for thought, it could work in the back though. My biggest concern would be day to day use of the back of the car with the radiator there.

Yeah good points Z_F and all taken on board. my rig is a weekend hack so day to day use is not really an issue. I do go camping with it though so some thought has to be put into it ease of getting to gear in the back without risk of getting burnt. This might mean tail gate that does allow to swing out.
As for sitting in water, the radiator in the stock position does alot of that anyway so I'm not too worried about that. its also located higher than in the engine bay as well so its no concern.
