Recently put WT diffs in my 1ltr. The perches were welded on with stock castor.

After driving it I've noticed that it won't straighten up on its own. I quickly measured the toe and it was bit out of spec. So I added a little toe in and it didn't help. Smashed heaps of toe in onto it and it didn't help.

When I put the diffs in I replaced the king pins. The FSM says the knuckle is meant to start at most at 2.8kg, mine was about 3.1-3.2kg. Because it looked like LR was the only place you could get shims I didn't worry about it. Would this be the problem?

Problem occurs both going forward and reverse.

Steering box is within spec. No play in ball joints. Have ran over every nut and bolt I touched after 3 or 4 little drives. Other than this it steers fine, no bump steer and tracks straight.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The knuckle starting torque is 1.0-1.8kg.

Is the steering lighter than previous?

Its a castor problem, more castor will give you more self centering but heavier steering.

My mistake, my starting torque was about 2.2kg then.

The steering doesn't feel lighter.

I'm going to say I'm certain the castor is the same as stock.

are you running a steering damper? (the shock absorber between the drag link and the chassis)... if so, take it out and see how it feels.

Get a wheel alignment done and get the castor measurement.

Ok had a wheel alignment done, the caster on the left was 3 degrees 30 minutes and on the right 5 degrees.

I don't know how much to trust these measurements seeing he thinks he adjusted my camber

So, is thus centering thing down to king pin preload? Am yet to try removing the steering dampner.

Have a look at the universal joint at the base of the steering column. Had the same prob with KT and that's what it was
